PhD Scholarships in Fisheries Technology

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Frist 30. april 2021

A number of PhD scholarships in Fisheries Technology are available at DTU Aqua (National Institute of Aquatic Resources, Technical University of Denmark) from June 2021 or later.

The projects will be carried out in the Section for Fisheries Technology at DTU Aqua in Hirtshals, Denmark.

The Section for Fisheries Technology has over 25 years of experience in developing cutting-edge technology to understand and improve the environmental and economic performance of commercial fisheries, and providing advice to policy makers. We have strong collaborative networks within Fisheries Technology, not only in Europe but also throughout the world.

Responsibilities and qualifications

Towed fishing gears, especially demersal trawls, are responsible for a large portion of unwanted catches, globally. Consequently, there is a large focus on improving their environmental sustainability while ensuring that the fisheries remain economically viable, i.e. that they are efficient in catching the species and sizes of interest while resulting in a low amount of unwanted by-catch and minimum impact on the surrounding environment. The development of technical solutions is key to achieving a sustainable utilization of the seas’ resources and plays a central role in most fisheries and fisheries management systems.

The PhD projects will be comprised of a combination of theoretical, laboratory and experimental work pertaining to documenting the effects of new fishing gears and the integration of new technologies in fishing gears. The research is likely to comprise (i) fishing gear trials on-board commercial fishing vessels to document their species and size selectivity, (ii) lab-based experiments to describe the selectivity of target and by-catch species from a theoretical perspective, and (iii) the development of new decision tools and methods for stakeholders to evaluate alternative fishing gear designs and new technologies that can help sustain an economical and environmentally viable fishery.

The specific contents of the projects will be formulated in cooperation with the successful candidates reflecting the candidates’ qualifications, under the outline defined by externally funded projects and ongoing activities. The candidates will join an active, international and cross-disciplinary research team.

A significant part of the research and development activities are to be carried out in collaboration with the fishing and fishing gear industries.

We are looking for candidates with experience in several of the following:

  • Research and working within the field of marine and aquatic sciences.
  • Planning and conducting field work.
  • Mathematical or statistical modelling.
  • An interest in or prior experience in programming, both backbone and frontend (e.g. Java, Python, C#, C++, R) is advantageous.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and orally.
  • Ability to conduct research independently and problem solving skills.
  • Strong interest in participating in an inter-disciplinary and international research environment.
  • Willingness to contribute to a positive and inspirational work atmosphere.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
