Women’s Rights Division Intern

The Women’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for a summer 2021 internship. Ideally, the candidate will be available for at least 12-15 hours a week for a period of 10 weeks (days and hours are flexible, as is starting date). There is preference for the candidate to be based in an European HRW office (Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, or Paris); however the possibility of interning from the United States will also be considered.

The intern will work closely with staff in the Women’s Rights Division, assisting with work on intersections between violence against women and girls and poverty and inequality in Europe. The intern will build skills in research methodology and advocacy in relation to women’s rights issues, including substantive knowledge on violence against women and girls and relevant law and policy in the European region. The intern will gain experience working with an international non-profit organization.

Interns also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, and/or special events relating to human rights, as well as to network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees.

Due to COVID-19, many of our offices remain closed or are open at a limited capacity. HRW prioritizes the safety of our interns. In locations that have eased office restrictions and are open at a limited capacity, interns are not expected to report to the office and remote arrangements will remain an option for the foreseeable future. However, interns may have the option of reporting to an office on a voluntary basis in accordance with HRW’s COVID-19 policies.

Responsibilities: The intern’s responsibilities may include the following:

  • Conducting desk research related to gender-based violence and other women’s rights issues in Europe;
  • Collecting and analyzing gender-based violence and other data, including from government agencies and information requests;
  • Gaining familiarity with international human rights law and standards on violence against women and girls, discrimination, inequality, and poverty;
  • Building knowledge and conducting analysis on relevant law and policies at national and European levels, including the European Union and Council of Europe;
  • Drafting research and background briefings;
  • Assisting on research and compiling information on local gender-based violence and women’s rights organizations and service providers;
  • Participating in phone calls or meetings with partners, and attending relevant events;
  • Monitoring media stories on violence against women and girls in relevant European countries, including in relevant languages; and
  • Gaining familiarity with work of other divisions including other thematic or regional research; fundraising; advocacy; communications, operations; etc.

Additional opportunities:

  • Direct exposure to the workings of a large, international human rights organization;
  • Induction training on the internal working of HRW;
  • Access to HRW materials and publications;
  • Attending select in-house events such as speaker series events and other events organized within the organization for interns and other staff; and
  • Attending internal staff meetings, HRW events, and external meetings and relevant events.


  • Applicants in Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Paris and the United States must be enrolled in an accredited, degree-granting undergraduate (preferably at the senior level) or graduate program or equivalent for the duration of the internship. The internship must be a required part of the intern’s academic program for successful applicants in Paris and Brussels. In some circumstances, successful applicants in Brussels can be recent graduates of an academic program who are undergoing an internship for further training.
  • Have a demonstrated passion for or strong interest in human rights, particularly women’s rights;
  • Be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable;
  • Have good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of or a demonstrated commitment to women’s rights is highly desirable;
  • Fluent English and fluency in at least one of the following: French, Spanish, Italian; additional language skills are desirable;
  • Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, internet applications) are essential.

Compensation: Depending on the jurisdiction, interns will receive compensation based on local law and HRW policy, such as an hourly wage, a monthly stipend, and/or reimbursement for lunch. Students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other US and international organizations. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
