PhD scholarship in Drone-based Geophysics

The Division of Geomagnetism and Geospace at DTU Space is seeking applicants for a 3-year fully funded Ph.D. position in drone-based geophysics with focus on magnetic methods.

The project will be conducted in the "Crustal Magnetism Technology & Research Group" (


) of the Division. CMAGTRES is a drone-based research group specialized in hardware/software development and application of drone-based magnetic systems as well as other geophysical mapping systems (Lidar, Photogrammetry, Multispectral and EM).

We are soon to start a new project with the purpose of using our novel drone geophysical systems for mapping regional scale structures relating to volcanic systems, green-transition minerals, geothermal reservoirs as well as small-scale structures relating to subsurface archaeology and contamination. In the project, we intend to apply and further optimize existing CMAGTRES geophysical processing routines and carry out integrated analysis of magnetic data in combination with additional drone-based geophysical data sets.

Responsibilities and qualifications

  • Work with existing magnetic data in the CMAGTRES databases in order to improve processing products. In particular, optimize existing processing routines for removal of magnetic flight line noise in high-gradient areas.
  • Carry out drone-based Magnetic, Lidar, Photogrammetry and Multispectral geophysical surveys in new areas in relation to selected geological, geothermal and archaeological sites.
  • Work with new data and publish integrated geophysical studies.

You will be an integrated part of a highly motivated team of researchers and engineers.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.


  • You have a strong background in geophysics and/or engineering with experience from magnetic

    data acquisition/theory

  • You have strong programming skills within Python and/or Matlab.
  • You preferably have prior experience in geophysical studies of geology, archaeology or subsurface contamination.
  • A fundamental knowledge of GNSS/GPS and IMU systems, geophysical data logging devices (e.g. using Rasperry Pi, Beaglebone, …) and drone-based technologies are an advantage.
  • You have an interest in working with drones and are not afraid of taking responsibility in the field. As such, you see yourself also as a technical problem solver.
  • Willingness to travel and work in an international environment as well as performing field work is essential.
  • You are a creative person and eager to collaborate in order to optimize the end-product in an iterative development process.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
