Terms of Reference Internship Donor Relations and Resource Mobilization Service Division of External Relations Title: DRRM Internship Duty Station: Geneva, Switzerland Duration: 6 months Contract Type: Internship Closing date: 21 April 2021 Start date: 5 May 2021 UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering an internship position within the Donor Relations and Resource Mobilization Service of the Division of External Relations (DER) at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Established in December 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR currently operates in over 130 countries, using its long expertise to protect and care for millions. Organisational context UNHCR’s Division of External Relations (DER) is responsible for: global communications and advocacy; partnerships and coordination with civil society, NGOs and UN agencies; partnerships with government; partnerships with private sector; and the organization’s records and archives. The Donor Relations and Resource Mobilization Service (DRRM) is tasked to maintain proactive dialogue with donor governments aimed at building relationships, raising awareness and mobilizing political and financial support for UNHCR’s work and priorities. This position sits within DRRM’s Donor Group II, which is responsible for parts of western, northern and eastern Europe including key partner countries such as Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, and Norway. 1 What are we looking for? We are looking for a dynamic intern who has a good understanding of the UN system, humanitarian issues, fundraising and/or donor/external relations, who can support the work of the Director of External Relations. The incumbent will report to the Senior Donor Relations Officer (DRO) in DRRM Group II. The Senior DRO will work closely with the incumbent and discuss the various issues and tasks daily. The ideal post-holder will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, have the skills and ability to support on the drafting/editing of funding proposals, reports, briefings and talking points, have excellent interpersonal and communications skills, and be able to work with and present complex data. Key responsibilities will include: • Contributing to the preparation of meeting minutes, briefings, talking points and other information packages as requested, and assisting in scheduling and preparing for internal and external meetings. • • • Assisting in the planning and implementation of annual bilateral meetings with several key UNHCR donors. Assisting in the preparation of donor funding proposals, reports and other documentation relating to contributions. Contribute to the development and implementation of the strategic engagement plans related to specific donors and assist in researching and drafting responses to queries from donors. • • • Assisting the Senior DRO with internal communication and information management within the team. Participating in weekly team meetings and other Service/Division-wide meetings as appropriate. Undertaking any other tasks assigned. Minimum qualifications required In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria: • Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within one year of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO ; and 1 1 In the education section of the application, please make sure that your school is selected from the list of accredited higher education institutions. NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship. Desirable qualifications and skills The ideal candidate will hold/have: • • • • • • • • • • • Interest in fundraising and external relations work; Interest in humanitarian issues and the work of the UN; Knowledge of Microsoft Office and strong computer skills; Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing; Required languages: English is essential; any additional European language is an asset Work experience in development or humanitarian environment; Excellent interpersonal skills; Diplomacy; Discretion; Meticulous attention to detail; Effective time management and strong organisational abilities. Conditions It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be either home-based or with the team in the Geneva, Switzerland.
