Structural Characterization Engineer
Microsoft Danmark ApS
Structural Characterization Engineer
Microsoft has been studying quantum computing for several years and has become the world’s center of expertise on topological quantum computing. The research effort includes a staff of theoretical, experimental and engineering teams around the world. At the Microsoft Quantum Lab Lyngby a team of material scientists, experimental and theoretical physicists and engineers works in collaboration with the global team on the design, fabrication, modeling and measurement of quantum devices, with the goal to study topological physics in new materials systems, and develop and prototype topological qubit devices. In our state of the art fabrication facility we grow materials and characterize them by developing cutting edge methods. Efficient process optimization requires data-driven decision-making, which heavily relies on reliable metrology and analysis of in-line, and end-of-line data.
The Microsoft Quantum Lab in Lyngby is looking for a structural characterization engineer to support our development of materials for Quantum bits. As a process engineer you will be responsible for developing, maintaining and analyzing all in-line structural characterization and work with data scientists for analysis at device level. A big emphasis will be on exploring new metrology and turning them into efficient methods to achieve and maintain high throughput of material moving through the process.
Responsibilities
Microsoft Quantum team is recruiting for a metrology engineer. Candidates will work closely together with materials growth and nano-fabrication engineers, obtaining data on materials and devices in a reliable and standardized way for quantitative analysis. The activities include but are not limited to:
- Develop and maintain metrology protocols for standardized and reliable data acquisition
- Work with colleagues to take over protocols for other than AFM methods which are used in Lyngby
- Drive automated acquisition to improve the throughput and reproducibility
- Assist with maintenance to keep the systems in operation and in compliance
- Act as a program wide point of contact for AFM and other scanning probe microscopy
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- Excellent knowledge of, and direct hands-on experience with optical, scanning electron and especially scanning probe microscopes
- Programming experience in data analysis, preferably using Python
- Experience in III-V semiconductor physics
- MSc Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related.
- Ability to work in an international and diverse environment and foster collaboration with colleagues
- Strongly target oriented mindset with ability to focus on the essential things to achieve program goals in time
- Seek for understanding of internal customer needs and develop solutions for them
- Communicate highly efficient: condense complex topics into easy to understand messages without oversimplifying
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in working with metrology
- At least two years in depth experience with Scanning probe microscopy and SEM analysis on semiconductor nanostructures
- Ability to draw conclusions and extract quantitative key parameters from the acquired images
- Experience with industrial statistical tools (JMP)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- Knowledge of electrical properties and measurements of nanowires is a plus
