The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DTU Mekanik) of the Technical University of Denmark has an open Postdoc position in the field of “Tool wear management in machining operations”. The Postdoc will be working in the framework of an ongoing collaboration between DTU Mechanical Engineering and LEGO which involves a large number of researchers at different seniority levels working on multiple and related projects within industrial production. This collaborative framework offers unique opportunities with respect to high level training in a multinational and multicultural environment. The Postdoc project will be carried out in an exciting combination of academic and industrial environments and the Postdoc is expected to work for the majority of her/his time at industrial facilities in Billund, Jutland.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Tool wear estimation can be achieved by means of direct or indirect wear measurements. Indirect measurements estimate tool conditions based on indirect signals such as spindle motor power absorption, being very dependent on local tool engagement and are therefore difficult to convert in reliable quantitative measures independent of the specific operation. The Postdoc project will focus on establishing methods for reliable indirect tool wear monitoring in finishing machining operations.

The position encompasses both theoretical work and experimental work, setup development and construction, process implementation, models validation through tests, process monitoring and dimensional, geometrical and surface characterization. Sensors selection and implementation, data acquisition and signal conditioning will be part of the experimental activities of the project.

The position has both project and academic responsibilities. The scientific development work conducted must be positioned relative to current literature and published in conferences and journal articles.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the PhD degree in engineering. Good knowledge of machining processes, process monitoring, data acquisition hardware and software and manufacturing metrology is a fundamental requirement. Knowledge of data analysis and image processing and programming tools such as Matlab are highly desirable. The candidate should have good mathematical/analytical skills as well as good communication skills.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
