The prevalence and importance of polymorphism (i.e. the same material in different crystal forms) occurring in pharmaceutical compounds are well recognised. It is of great importance to prepare and select the right crystal form from the beginning during drug discovery and development [1].

LEO Pharma, Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) department is in search of an enthusiastic and hands-on intern to assist the chemistry laboratory on an exciting project, aimed at understanding the polymorphic behaviour of material from a fermented mixture.

We would like a person with good technical background to help us understand the chemistry and key mechanisms driving the polymorphic behaviour of materials and evaluate the potential impact at production scale. With the right approach this project has the potential to deliver key information for continuous support to our commercial production.

You will work alongside and get support from a team of highly skilled technicians and scientists in the MSAT Chemistry Lab to fully understand this solid-state and particle engineering problem. The knowledge and experience you will develop on this project will put you in good stead for furthering your career in the fine chemicals or pharmaceutical industry.

Objectives

Get up to speed on the principles of polymorphism and crystallisation and how different crystal forms can impact product quality in the pharmaceutical sector.

Get up to speed with using our state-of-the-art lab reactors and technologies, and become an expert on the configuration, control, cleaning, and maintenance of these equipment.

Develop and execute your hypothesis/ideas toward the goal of understanding the polymorphic behaviour of materials.

Collaborate in an inter-disciplinary environment, for example with the production team, Analytical Support and QC departments to gain further insight into polymorphism and other crystal form challenges.

Project requires:

Performing solubility, crystallisation and competitive polymorphism experiments in small scale lab equipment.

Acquire and incorporate samples from our current production facility for testing and comparison to lab results. This will involve a high degree of collaboration with the production team, Analytical Support and QC departments.

The ability to analyze data and draw conclusions is important.

Student profile:

  • Serious, dependable, hardworking, good communicator and social.
  • Fast learner with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of basic chemistry and/or chemical engineering principles.
  • Good laboratory skills.
