Background.
In the shipping industry, biocide-based antifouling coatings are used on a large scale to prevent marine biofouling. The antifouling coating is applied on ship hulls and the release of biocides from the surface of the coating film acts to repel or poison potential settling organisms. Biofouling is undesirable for the shipping industry both from an economic and environmental point of view. The accumulation of organisms leads to a significant decrease in ship performance, resulting in increased fuel consumption (and associated greenhouse gas emission) compared to a smooth hull. A high degree of fouling on a ship’s hull significantly increases the drag, reducing the overall hydrodynamic performance of the ship.

In recent years, the use of biocides (copper, tributyltin, co-biocides) has been strictly controlled by both national and international regulations, such as the Biocidal Product Regulation (BPR) in the EU and International Maritime Organization (IMO). The uncontrolled leakage of biocides from antifouling coatings is harmful to aquatic life and the environment. Thus, there is a high demand for developing a sustainable antifouling technology that significantly reduces the dispersal of biocides into the marine environment.

  • This projectwill be in collaboration with the Danish company EnCoat, which has developed an encapsulation
technology that reduces the overall biocide demand in an antifouling coating.

The encapsulation technology is based on highly porous silica aerogels, which form a cage-like structure around the biocides that helps to control the biocide release rate and thereby minimizing the surplus of biocide. In order to optimize the encapsulation technology and thereby prolong the service life of a coating, it is necessary to understand the underlying mechanisms in the coating and parameters affecting the biocide release. A release study will give a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the release of the biocide and thereby contribute to developing a more environment-friendly antifouling coating.

Objectives.
The main objective of this project is to understand how aerogel encapsulation affects biocide release in an antifouling coating. Design a laboratory set-up to measure the leaching rates from a coating containing aerogel-encapsulated biocides. Investigate the influence of aerogel type and water quality (e.g. salinity) on biocide release rates. Wishes and ideas from the student may be included in the project.

Content:

- Literature review on antifouling coatings, coating mechanisms and relevant analysis methods

- Coating formulation and water absorption measurements

- Develop set-up for experimental determination of leaching rates of different coatings

- Study of biocide release rates along a salinity gradient
