Post-doc in the societal impact of organization theory

Copenhagen Business School, Department of Organization invites applications for a vacant post-doc position within the field of organization theory. The post-doc position has a duration of three years, including one year of teaching responsibility. The anticipated starting date is September 1, 2021.

This post-doc position is part of the collaborative research project, entitled “Turning theory into action: Undesirable consequences of implementing organization and management theory” (details available upon request), which is funded by the Velux Foundation’s core group program and led by Professor Eva Boxenbaum and Professor Renate Meyer. The position focuses on how organizational actors interpret organization theory when they implement it in practice. The candidate will investigate translation processes as well as the impact of these processes on the studied organizations and society more broadly. The candidate should be familiar with organizational institutional theory (e.g., institutional translation) and qualitative research, and interested in studying the societal impact of organizational research. The position involves extensive empirical fieldwork in Denmark, a willingness to reside in the Copenhagen area, as well as regular physical presence at CBS for the contract period. The candidate will collaborate closely with the project team (i.e., the project leaders, one other post-doc, and one PhD candidate) in an integrated team structure, hosted within the Department of Organization at Copenhagen Business School.

The Department of Organization (IOA)
is an international department comprising 54 faculty members in the areas of organization studies, organization theory, public management and governance, political economy, economic sociology, and science and technology studies. Our research and teaching address organizational and managerial processes and consequences in workplaces, organizations and networks. More specifically, we investigate and discuss issues such as organization of innovation, change and reform processes, work and human resources, project management, institutional dynamics, market formation, social networks and power. The department contributes to the CBS PhD School with 30 PhD students enrolled.

IOA teaches core courses in organizational theory and analysis at all levels of the CBS degree programs. We also deliver teaching in international political economy, HRM, project management, change management, organizational psychology, leadership, qualitative methods and many other courses. Our teaching aims to combine theoretical curiosity, critical reflexivity, empirical specificity and practical relevance. It is a key ambition to make any student aware that most social phenomena rest upon and involve organization of some sort.

The following

qualifications
will count substantially in the assessment of candidates:

  • Accomplished academic research record.
  • Proven application of qualitative methods and advanced social science theory.
  • Proven ability to perform research successfully in professional environments.
  • Oral and written proficiency in English and a Scandinavian language.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Enthusiasm for empirical research and theoretical curiosity.

  • Any relevant information indicating experience in teaching, research management, industry co-operation and international co-operation.

Only publications written in English (or another specified principal language, according to research tradition) or one of the Scandinavian languages will be taken into consideration.
  • It is possible, but not required, to include letters of recommendation.
  • Documentation for English and Scandinavian language skills unless the candidate is a native speaker.

Recruitment procedure

The Recruitment Committee will shortlist 2-5 applicants, which the Assessment Committee will evaluate. The applicants will receive notification of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline. The applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed, each applicant will receive notification of the outcome of his or her application.
