The Center for Macroscopic Quantum States (bigQ) at DTU Physics offers excellent candidates unique opportunities to pursue a PhD in the field of experimental and theoretical quantum information science.

bigQ is a Danish national Center of Excellence in quantum information science and technology. The purpose of the center is to explore quantum physics in new macroscopic regimes, deepening our understanding of quantum physics, and speeding up the development of emerging quantum technologies. Our main focus is basic research, but we strongly encourage and support innovation and industry partnerships.

The center comprises around 45 people (with 17 nationalities) including Faculty members, PhD students, postdocs, engineers and an administrator.

Short project descriptions

PhD project in quantum non-linearities based on color centers in diamond

Giant non-linear transformations are realizable by interfacing a two-level system with an optical field inside a micro-cavity. In this project, we will use color centers in diamond placed inside a high quality fiber cavity to enable a deterministic non-Gaussian transformation of a propagating light field.

PhD projects in continuous variable quantum information processing

In these projects, we will generate macroscopic CV quantum states of light (squeezed, entangled and novel non-Gaussian states) and use these states for the realization of CV quantum communication and quantum computation protocols. We will use similar schemes for the realization of extreme quantum sensing and for foundational tests of quantum mechanics.

PhD projects in continuous variable quantum opto-mechanics

We plan to prepare acoustic modes of pristine crystals in the quantum regime using the unique toolbox of CV quantum information science. Using CV quantum states, low-loss CV detection schemes and CV protocols, we aim at generating and characterizing non-classical states of acoustic modes at low temperatures.

PhD project in CV theoretical quantum information processing

In this project we will develop new quantum error correcting codes (including distillation and purification codes) for CV quantum communication and CV quantum computation. Existing codes are very challenging to implement experimentally, and thus the sole aim is to develop codes that are more practical. We also aim at developing new and practical CV quantum communication protocols and CV computer algorithms.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for exceptional physicists and engineers with extraordinary talents and outstanding drives. We are in particular looking for people with academic excellence and/or with demonstrated scientific achievements. We also expect that you have an exceptional ability to conceive new ideas and construct well-working experimental setups. What matters the most is your internal drive to make significant and groundbreaking progress.

We expect the successful candidate to have a solid background in quantum mechanics, some experience with experimental quantum optics if you apply for the experimental project and proficiency in theoretical quantum information if you apply for the theory project.

What do we offer?

  • An opportunity to explore completely new regimes of physics and information, both theoretically and experimentally.
  • An outstanding research group doing research at the absolute forefront of quantum science.
  • A friendly and professional research environment with solid support from supervisors, colleagues, and technical and administrative staff.
  • An opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art laboratory and with smart scientists.
  • Competitive university salaries and tax deduction benefits (for foreign researchers).
  • Support to travel to workshops, conferences and schools.
  • Strong support in career planning for PhD students.

What do we expect?

  • You are excited about large challenges, and you very much enjoy solving them.
  • You have an extraordinary drive towards achieving groundbreaking results.
  • You enjoy working in a team with an open minded spirit. You are excited to teach and learn from other group members.
  • You love to discuss physics and to participate in thoughtful conversations.
  • You make things work and deliver!
