Frist 30. maj 2021

We are looking for a PhD student to investigate interlayer excitons in two-dimensional materials as the basis of new light sources. You will work in a group that is already working on interlayer excitons and there will be daily discussions and interactions. You will spend an external research stay in the group of Prof. Zhipei Sun in Finland.

Project description

Two-dimensional (2D) materials including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and hexagonal boron nitride can form heterostructures by weak Van der Waals forces, giving enormous opportunities for engineering their optoelectronic properties. Interlayer excitons, which are electron-hole pairs bound by Coulomb interactions but residing in distinct 2D sheets, have been studied in TMD heterostructures, showing unique properties with respect to long lifetime and electrical tunability. In this project, we will perform a fundamental study of quantum exciton resonances in 2D TMD heterostructures, keeping in mind their possible use for the development of novel optoelectronic devices. Specifically, the project is to develop a novel class of light source relying on 2D heterostructures integrated with a silicon photonic chip, which is CMOS-compatible, and suitable for chip-level integration.

Youwill investigate the following topics:

  • Fabrication of high-quality 2D materials and heterostructures by exfoliation and stacking techniques.
  • Design and fabrication of photonic nanostructures at DTU Nanolab
  • Optical characterizations of 2D heterostructures integrated with photonic nanostructures.
  • Exploration of light-matter interactions in 2D-photonic integrated systems

Qualifications

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

A strong background within the topics of the PhD project is preferred, e.g., experience in optical characterization and 2D materials, and / or nanofabrication.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the
