The Electronics group at DTU Electrical Engineering seeks a qualified candidate for a vacant 3-year PhD position in the area of power electronics.

The Electronics group is responsible for power electronics research including advanced high efficiency dc-dc and dc-ac converters for renewable energy and storage applications. The goal of this PhD project is to research electromagnetic transient phenomenon as well as their associated electromagnetic interference elimination schemes incl. both passive and active approaches, in very compact power electronics systems equipped with wide bandgap power devices.

Responsibilities and qualifications
High frequency power electronics is the key technology of forming future multiple renewable energy systems and achieving energy digitalization. New semiconductor materials i.e. Wide Band Gap (WBG) semiconductors, such as Silicon Carbide (SiC), Gallium Nitride (GaN) have significantly improved power conversion efficiency. However, fast switching transients (which produce high dv/dt and di/dt) introduced by WBG devices also bring more severe and inevitable Electromagnetic Transient (ET), which has become a vital issue and attracted more and more research interest globally.

In this project, we will research approaches of processing and underlying mechanisms of the high power electronics system’s electromagnetic transient behavers in nature, therefore effectively predict electromagnetic transients, and finally establish a fundamental theory specifically for power electronics analysis and design. This project will use a comprehensive and novel set of methods and multiple levels’ data including time and frequency domains on hybrid power electronic systems across signal, power/energy and harmonics and noise flows using finite element simulation platforms or high frequency modelling based on advanced measurement techniques.

Moreover, this project is a joint PhD project with DTU’s alliance partner University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. The PhD candidate will stay at least 6 months and carry out collaborated research between DTU and UQ in the field of power electronics.

Any candidate who:

  • has good grasps of analysis and synthesis of electromagnetic field, as well as electromagnetic noise generation, transmission, perception, and measurement.
  • has good grasps of analysis and synthesis of hard- and soft-switched power converters
  • has experience in multi-physics simulations
  • has experience of using wide bandgap devices, SiC and GaN
  • has experience with digital control
  • has good experience in using PCB layout software
  • has good experience in making laboratory prototypes, debugging and testing power electronic circuits
  • is able to use communication skill in English at a good level
  • has record of high quality journal publications

will be considered as a candidate with favorable background. The candidate with highly self-motivation and enthusiasm, and is able to work well in a team environment.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
