We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled candidate to join us as PhD scholar.

Vattenfall is one of Europe´s largest electricity generators and producer of heat and operates in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. Our strategy is to reduce emissions from power generation with an ambition to become fossil free within one generation. During your time in Vattenfall you will work within our Business Area Wind, Offshore, Engineering. The Engineering department is the technical know-how center within Business Area Wind.

Context

The position is part of the ADOreD (Accelerating the Deployment of Offshore wind using Dc technology) project. ADOreD is one of the largest industrial doctoral networks contributing to the decarbonization of electric power system via developing the most appropriate models and methods for a coordinated approach to offshore renewable connections. Six academic and 12 industrial beneficiaries will recruit and train 19 doctoral candidates performing research on topics spanning offshore wind, HVDC technology and grids and interactions between AC and DC systems. ADOReD is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research & innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 101073554.

In accordance with MSCA Doctoral Networks, candidates must comply with mobility rule: you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before immediately before your recruitment date.

The increase of HVDC connections to evacuate wind energy from offshore sites have shown to be economically feasible and sustainable. Therefore we see that larger and larger HVDC transmission is being used which is leading to multiple windfarms being connected at the offshore connection point. Hence this will cause a multi- vendor/operator scenario in the offshore grid. With different control implementation dynamic stability becomes increasingly important and would also require a more complex control structure able to ensure stability among converter-based technologies with quite different characteristics.

You will focus on modelling, simulating and analysing the stability of controllers in the offshore grid. To do so, you will implement controllers representing wind turbines, park controller and HVDC transmission, you will develop advanced grid following/grid forming controllers and analyse the dynamic stability of 100% converter-based. You are expected to work closely with the industry partner, and collaborate with ADOreD fellow PhD students and others in the department.

Responsibilities and qualifications

Your primary tasks will be:

  • Plan and manage your PhD project in collaboration with supervisors
  • Model HVDC connected offshore wind farms, propose methodology for evaluating offshore stability.
  • Develop advanced grid following/forming controllers
  • Analyse the dynamic stability of 100% converter-based systems
  • Contribute to education in teaching and co-supervising BSc and MSc student projects

A detailed project plan will be developed with the supervisors within the first three months after enrolment.

Candidates should have a

two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points)

in engineering, natural sciences or similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a Master’s degree. The successful candidate is required to have:

  • Documented background in wind/HVDC electrical modelling and control
  • Experience with converter control
  • Experience with simulation tools such as Matlab Simulink, PSCAD or similar, especially with power system and/or power electronics models and simulation in time-domain and frequency-domain
  • Technical knowledge on control systems (e.g. current control, voltage control) and power system elements (e.g. transmission lines, transformers, generators, cables)
  • Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals
  • Fluency in communicating and reporting in English

The successful candidate must also fulfil the requirements for admission to a PhD program at DTU.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education.

Assessment

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Nicolaos A. Cutululis, Researcher Oscar-Saborío-Romano, Dr. Walid Ziad El-Khatib and Alin Raducu, both from attenfall Vindkraft. Information about the applicants may be shared with other partners from the ADOreD consortium.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years from which 18 months at DTU and 18 months at Vattenfall Vindkraft.
