PhD scholarship in forensic genetic statistics using mitochondrial DNA and other genetic lineage markers (17-22103)

Aalborg Universitet (AAU)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Mathematical Sciences, a PhD scholarship is advertised within the general PhD program Mathematics, Physics and Computational Science. The scholarship can be filled from 1 February 2023 or shortly thereafter.

Job description
Forensic genetics involves studying genetic markers from biological material in a legal context. The Department of Mathematical Sciences collaborates with the Section of Forensic Genetics, Department of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Together, the departments carry out research in forensic genetics, e.g., lineage markers, population genetic studies for estimation of geographical origin, phenotypic characteristics of the colour of eyes, skin, and hair, as well as studies of genetics, epigenetics, and the transcriptome, e.g., in heart and skin diseases. The PhD student will interact with colleagues at the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Section of Forensic Genetics, Department of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

The PhD project's primary focus is forensic genetic statistics regarding mitochondrial DNA and other genetic lineage markers. The research will include simulations of the distribution of mitochondrial DNA sequences in various populations, analyses and modelling mitochondrial and other lineage genome data from various populations concerning reproducibility, estimation of DNA frequencies, and validation of statistical models based on simulated and observed data. Due to strong dependency structures, advanced statistical methods will be developed and applied.

Applicants are expected to have extensive knowledge of statistical models and probability theory. Good programming skills are needed to handle large, complex data sets and test new statistical models. The PhD student will work with colleagues at the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Section of Forensic Genetics, Department of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Good collaboration and communication skills and a good understanding of the particular forensic genetic aspects are required.

Further information regarding the scientific issues and terms of employment can be obtained from the head of section of statistics and mathematical economics Rasmus Waagepetersen, +45 9940 8856, [email protected]

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Katrine Eline Søndergaard, The Doctoral School at The Faculty of Engineering and Science, email: [email protected], phone: +45 9940 3374.

The application is only to be submitted online by using the "Apply online" button below.

AAU wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background or belief.

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of 28 June 2019 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the current Circular of 11 December 2019 on the employment structure at Danish universities.
