Data Analyst Intern
Red Barnet
Internship Opportunity at Save the Children Denmark
Data Analysis Intern
Are you passionate about Data collection, research and trend analysis within the Development and Humanitarian sector? And about using your skills to help inform programming and advocacy?
Apply to be the new Data Analysis Intern for Save the Children Denmark (SCD)!
The Program Quality, Impact and Innovation (PQII) team at SCD is looking for an intern for the Autumn 2025 semester. The PQII team works with providing technical support in the thematic areas of climate change, local leadership, gender equality, and monitoring and evaluation.
The proposed position would be focused on data-led trend analysis for the humanitarian and development sector, with a particular focus on SCD and our programming interests. The role would primarily use the OECD dataset on Overseas Development Aid spending to undertake exploratory quantitative data analysis to identify novel patterns, trends and insights. It would require working closely with different regional and thematic leads throughout the International Department to help direct the analysis so that its insights would have the greatest possible impact for our work. As well as undertaking the data analysis itself, there would be scope for producing research and learning outputs for SCD, the wider Save the Children Alliance, and the sector at large.
Internship period:
- Starting from 15th September for: 22 weeks, full time and unpaid, with a total of 825 hours – equivalent to 30 ECTS points
- In person position based in Copenhagen Denmark
The ideal candidate’s profile:
· Strong experience of quantitative data analysis, especially of very large and complex datasets.
· Advanced Excel user; knowledge of other statistical analysis packages such as SPSS is an advantage.
· Ability to work with (non-research) colleagues to understand their needs and interests and apply that effectively to the data analysis.
· Ability to translate complex data into key messages and insights for non-researchers, in an accessible and non-technical manner.
· Strong writing skills, in English.
· Knowledge and experience of undertaking data analysis in the humanitarian and development sector is a distinct advantage.
· Experience of analysing datasets describing financial flows over time is an advantage.
Detailed description:
For several years SCD has invested in a staff position with responsibility for scoping and analysing the geopolitical trends affecting our operating environment. Given the dramatic and sustained cuts to overseas development aid (ODA) announced by the Trump administration at the start of the year, much of our focus so far has been on seeking to better understand how the financial environment is changing and what existing data can tell us. Perhaps the most definitive source of data on ODA is the publicly-available OECD Data Explorer. This enormous dataset contains granular level detail on ODA for more than 60 years, from all donor and recipient countries globally. The hundreds of thousands of data points have the potential to provide an enormous amount of insight into what’s happening financially in our sector, and enhance our ability to think through what the future could look like. We would be interested, for example, in better understanding flows of finances from donor countries to the countries in which SCD operates in and how this has changed over time, or the characteristics of financial flows on the different thematic areas in which we work (e.g. gender, climate). We would envisage that there would be opportunity during the internship to explore multiple lines of enquiry, first and foremost informed by the interests and needs of different teams within the International Department but also in line with the personal and professional research interests of the successful candidate.
SCD prioritises research and insight that is practically useful to colleagues and programme teams; without being easy to understand by non-technical staff and accessible and relevant, it has little value. As such, the position would work closely with colleagues to better understand their needs, questions and evidence gaps, and collaboratively develop data analysis questions. Furthermore, the role would focus on translating often highly complex data into simple and meaningful takeaways for colleagues throughout SCD and beyond. There would be scope to write short briefs and reports, explore more creative ways to communicate findings, and potentially present learning to internal and external colleagues.
