One or more PhD Stipends in Brain-tongue computer interfacing

One or more PhD Stipends are available at the Center for Rehabilitation Robotics, Department of Health Science and Technology, The Faculty of Medicine. The research programme is Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience. The stipends are open for appointment from 1 August 2024.

Jobbeskrivelse
This job advertisement concerns a PhD study, which will focus on Brain computer interfacing and Tongue computer interfacing for computer control and it will be based at Center for rehabilitation robotics at the Department of Health Science and Technology(HST). HST carries out multidisciplinary research, teaching and dissemination within biomedical engineering, sports science and medicine. The department has more than 250 employees and is responsible for more than 1700 students. More than 70 PhD students are enrolled in the doctoral school affiliated to the department. The researchers are organized in a number of research groups and centres, and the department has at its disposal laboratory and clean room facilities for cell growth, molecular biology, brain analysis, 3D movement analysis, respiratory and circulatory examinations, sensory and motor functions analysis, etc. All study programs at Aalborg University involve problem-based learning, organized around cases and projects. For more, see:www.hst.aau.dk.

Translational research in rehabilitation, robotics and human machine interfacing is the focus of the research group Neurorehabilitation Robotics and Engineering at HST, which the PhD student will join. This group runs the Center for rehabilitation robotics(CRERoB) and develops new robotic, rehabilitative, diagnostic and assistive technologies for clinicians and for individuals with neurological impairments related to e.g. spinal cord injuries, stroke and ALS. Further, the group studies the implication of the technologies within neurorehabilitation including studies of the induced neuroplasticity.
As part of this research the group performs human experimental studies and clinical experimental studies in collaboration with clinicians and industry.

The PhD study is part of the continuation of a large interdisciplinary project within CRERoB:https://vbn.aau.dk/en/projects/intelligent-hybrid-light-weight-tendon-based-exoskeleton-for-seve

The PhD student will be joining a creative and dynamic international team with close collaboration with other PhD students and postdocs within this larger project frame.

The successful applicant(s) should investigate the integration of novel tongue interfaces and brain computer interfaces in the design of computer based communications systems for severely paralyzed individuals. The research will include development of tongue-brain control interfaces and schemes(including both software and hardware) and performance of studies involving both able-bodied individuals and individuals with sensory and/or motor disabilities.

Experience with human experimentation and human machine interface design will be prioritized.
The successful candidate(s) for the PhD stipend holds a Master's degree in biomedical engineering, human machine interfacing, or equivalent with the prospect of pursuing studies on Tongue-Brain hybrid control of computers for communication purposes.

A high proficiency in oral and written English is required. In case of international applicants it is expected that the applicant will learn to speak Danish within approximately two years to be able to perform experimental studies with Danish patients. Good dissemination skills are important.

Requirement:
As part of the application, the applicant is requested to submit a"project description", which is a suggestion for a PhD project within the topics mentioned above. This project description should include: Background, problem statement, project activities/methods for problem solution, and a time schedule e.g. by using a Gantt Chart.

You may obtain further information from Professor Lotte N. S. Andreasen Struijk, Head of CRERoB, Department of Health Science and Technology, email:[email protected], concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

As The Faculty of Medicine wishes PhD positions to enable careers both within and outside the university, the vacant positions are created in such a way that the competences achieved in the position will qualify for both a research career and a career in the commercial and/or public sector. At least a year before the position expires, you will be offered an interview to clarify your future career.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Ruth Klitte, The Doctoral School at The Faculty of Medicine, email:[email protected]
