The Library Services team is dedicated to meeting the evolving information needs of ECB staff with expertise and extensive resources, including a strong information supplier network. We are currently working on the digital transformation of our library to provide innovative tools and services that simplify the retrieval, access and use of information. The Information Governance Division is also developing its range of services to strengthen the ECB’s knowledge management and collaboration capabilities.

In your role as a trainee in Library Services, you will join a dynamic and service oriented team responsible for:

  • providing knowledge and information management services to support the work of the ECB;
  • supporting the ECB’s knowledge management roadmap and promoting a knowledge-sharing culture;
  • advising on the use of tools and techniques to make the sharing of knowledge and information across the ECB easier;

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role As a Library trainee you will:

  • provide reference services and research support to library users by helping them find and access information, advising them on library policies and gathering their feedback;
  • support library users in borrowing and returning materials, including the processing of renewals and hold requests;
  • help catalogue and classify information and keep the library areas well organised, e.g. by updating signage;
  • participate in the sharing of knowledge within the organisation, e.g. by creating and maintaining subject-specific guides, developing existing awareness services or supporting research initiatives;
  • contribute to the development and implementation of innovative library services and projects, such as testing new AI tools or improving library processes and systems;
  • raise awareness of available resources and services within the ECB.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to gain experience in providing information services in an institutional environment, gain insight into the activities of a central bank and help shape the future of information and knowledge management at the ECB. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

  • an ability to locate, evaluate and use information from both print and digital sources;
  • experience of supporting library or other customers, including addressing enquiries and providing guidance;
  • a good knowledge of the MS Office package, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • an understanding of cataloguing standards and classification systems (e.g. the Dewey Decimal Classification and the Library of Congress Classification);
  • an ability to manage and contribute to library projects, ensuring timely and successful completion of tasks;
  • an ability to troubleshoot in relation to library resources, user access and technology;
  • an ability to manage data, catalogue materials and maintain records with precision and accuracy.

You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe. You are keen to be part of our team and to use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
