Mechanical Engineer for FCC-ee (EN-MME-EDS-2025-251-GRAE)

CERN - The European Research Center of Particle Physics

Employment Type: Full-time

Your responsibilities:
The Mechanical and Materials Engineering (EN-MME) group, within the Engineering Department (EN), is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to follow-up the construction, planning, maintenance and upgrade of the FCC-ee arc half-cell mock-up.

The FCC-ee is one of the proposed new accelerators to be built at CERN in the coming years. It is a lepton circular collider with a circumference of ~90km, more than 70km of which are made by the arcs. An arc is a repeatable sector of the machine which combines dipoles and short-straight sections, with the functions to give the curvature to the beam trajectory, as well as focalizing it in the two main planes.

The arc half-cell is thus the most repeated region of hardware in the FCC-ee, and for this reason, a mock-up of it has been designed and is under preparation at CERN. It will be used to test aspects related to installation, transport, safety, alignment, vibration / stability, as well as for outreaching purposes.

You will join the FCC WP11 team, which is in charge of the design, installation, test planning, maintenance and upgrade of this mock-up.

You will:

  • Your role will be to support the team with engineering calculations required for the safe operation and upgrade of the mock-up; these calculations typically involve static structural, modal and vibrational mechanical analyses. Thermal analyses might also be required to study the response to thermal loads of the short-straight section elements. We expect that these calculations activities will represent about 50% of your workload. The other 50% of the time will be reserved to the follow-up and coordination of several in-situ activities, for example the planned interventions to maintain / upgrade the mock-up, the testing campaigns, the visits.
  • You will participate to the regular project meetings, presenting the results of your studies and actively contributing to the advancement of the project.
  • You will work in strong collaboration with the groups involved in the FCC-ee Pre-TDR study.
  • You will also be required to prepare reports and technical notes, to document the work done.

More information here.

Your profile:
Skills:

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency with finite element analysis software for thermal and structural simulations (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL).
  • Understanding of the behaviour and design principles of ductile and brittle materials.
  • Initial experience with 3D CAD software (e.g. CATIA).
  • Familiarity with International Standards dealing with the design and safety of structural and pressure equipment (e.g. Eurocode, EN-13445) would be an asset.

Coordination and on-site activities:

  • Willingness to participate in the definition, planning and follow-up of on-site activities.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage weekly meetings, with tracing of minutes and actions.

Soft Skills:

  • Attitude to teamwork in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to the evolving project priorities.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information
Job closing date: 16.12.2025 at 23:59 CET.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-March-2026

This position involves:

  • A valid driving licence.

Field of work: Mechanical Engineering

What we offer

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 5196 and 5716 Swiss Francs (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
