Do you want to advance the future of weather forecasting in Denmark and beyond?

At the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), we are looking for two Research Scientists to help operate, develop, and innovate our national numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems. As a part of our Weather Models Unit, you will be part of a strong scientific community working at the intersection of national operations and European collaboration.

Our NWP systems form the backbone of Denmark’s weather services, supporting critical warnings, renewable energy planning, and climate-related decision making. In these roles, you will contribute to both the robustness of daily forecasting and the long-term scientific development of next-generation novel model systems.

Your role
As a Research Scientist at DMI, you will take an active role in both operational model responsibility and international scientific development. Your work will focus on:

  • Developing, maintaining, and improving DMI’s national NWP systems, ensuring stability, quality, and continuous development.
  • Developing new model capabilities, including advances in physics, data assimilation, and computational efficiency, depending on your skills.
  • Contributing to international collaboration through ACCORD and United Weather Centres, working with research partners across Europe.
  • Participating in research and development projects, from high-resolution forecasting to regional reanalysis and innovative use of observational data.
  • Ensuring a strong and transparent link between scientific progress and operational implementation.

Your contributions will help ensure that DMI continues to deliver precise, reliable, and timely forecasts to society, today and in the future.

Who are you?
We are seeking colleagues who are scientifically curious, collaborative, and motivated to turn complex scientific insights into real-world impact. You thrive in a research environment where ideas are shared openly, and where operational responsibility and scientific exploration go hand in hand.

We expect you to bring most of the following:

  • Education: A PhD (or equivalent) in atmospheric sciences, oceanography, physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or a related field.
  • Scientific programming: Proficiency is essential. You should have demonstrable skills in software development for data analysis and modeling. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python and potentially Fortran is an advantage. Experience with continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) practices, tools, and methodologies is an advantage, though not required.
  • Data Handling: Strong data management and analysis skills, including data pre-processing and post-processing, are vital for success in this role. Knowledge of datasets such as GRIB, NetCDF, and Zarr is an advantage but not required.
  • Experience with numerical modelling, preferably NWP or other geophysical models.
  • Linux and Scripting: Proficiency in Linux and scripting is required for working in our research environment.
  • Collaborative Mindset. A collaborative mindset and the ability to work constructively with both national colleagues and international partners.
  • Innovative Thinking: We seek individuals who are naturally curious, creative, and highly motivated. Your ability to think outside the box and propose innovative solutions will be a valuable asset to our team.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in both oral and written English is essential for collaborating effectively with our international partners and conveying your research findings.

Experience with model physics, data assimilation, verification, cloud computing, or machine learning is an advantage, but not a requirement.

About the Weather Models unit
You will join the Weather Models Unit, a team of 20 dedicated researchers who design, develop, and maintain Denmark’s numerical weather prediction systems. We operate close to DMI’s forecast units and collaborate closely with scientific partners across Europe.

Employment and salary
Employment and salary will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary.

DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. If you come from abroad, there is a possibility for a reduced tax scheme the first 7 years.

På DMI betjener vi samfundet med meteorologisk viden og data inden for rigsfællesskabet Danmark, Færøerne og Grønland med omliggende farvande og luftrum. Vi har ca. 250 medarbejdere. De fleste arbejder på Lyngbyvej i København. DMI's historie begyndte allerede for ca. 200 år siden, og DMI er derfor en af de ældste statslige institutioner i Danmark.
