Postdoc in the Didactics of Physics - DTU Physics

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Are you passionate about quantum physics and how to teach it? Do you have lab experience in quantum optics and do you like an engineering challenge? Would you like to play a key part in advancing quantum-science-and-technology education at DTU and the University of Copenhagen?

At DTU Physics we are looking for a talented postdoc or engineer to develop and build new portable teaching experiments that can be brought into classes for hands-on student activities. The setups will realise advanced concepts including quantum squeezed light, control and sensing with single spins in diamond, and possibly optomechanics.

The setups will be used at both DTU and the University of Copenhagen and the project will be carried out in collaboration with partners developing didactic activities and studying the learning outcomes.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your main responsibility will be to develop the design of and implement three portable experimental quantum optical setups for use in courses related to quantum science and technology, such as Quantum Optics (10380), Quantum Information Technology (10385), Quantum Mechanics (10102), Quantum Photonic Communication (34042) and similar courses at the University of Copenhagen. You will also need to develop both technical documentation and easy-to-use instructions for the setups. You will be collaborating closely with the lab manager, technician, and researchers within the Section for Quantum Physics and Information Technology (QPIT), as well as with the course responsible teachers at both universities, didactic experts, and with the teaching lab at DTU Physics (“Nanoteket”).

At QPIT we explore fundamental quantum physics and pursue the development of emerging quantum technologies through extensive experimental and theoretical activities. Our main focus is basic research, but we strongly encourage and support innovation and industry partnerships. We are also very active in teaching an education within quantum science and technology, both at DTU and in collaborations within Denmark and internationally. The section offers a stimulating and diverse working environment, comprising around 60 people (with 23 nationalities) including Faculty members, PhD students, postdocs, engineers and an administrator.

We expect you to have

  • Strong experience with experimental quantum optics.
  • Interest in didactics and teaching.
  • Ability to take a global view of multi-year experimental work from initial design over implementation and testing to deployment. Motivation to take ownership of the project.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience and/or outreach activities is a plus.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years, with starting date as soon as possible (with some flexibility). The position is full time.

  • Application (cover letter)
  • CV
  • Academic Diplomas (MSc/PhD – in English)
  • List of publications

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply. As DTU works with research in critical technology, which is subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates for the position.

At DTU Physics, we carry out cutting-edge research in modern physics, with particular focus on four main areas: quantum technology, sustainable energy, materials, and biophysics. Our focus is both to acquire greater knowledge about basic scientific problems and to conduct research oriented towards use in societies and companies.

Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment. DTU has campuses in all parts of Denmark and in Greenland, and we collaborate with the best universities around the world.
