Industrial PhD Researcher

Oticon A/S

- in audio signal processing and machine learning for hearing technology

Location: Oticon A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark

Are you passionate about audio technology, signal processing, and machine learning? Do you want to work on cutting-edge research that improves the lives of millions of people worldwide? Then this fully funded Industrial PhD Fellowship could be your next big step!

This is a unique opportunity to combine academic excellence with real-world impact. In this industrial PhD project, you will join Oticon A/S, a global leader in hearing aid technology, and collaborate with the Signal Processing Group at the Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics, University of Oldenburg, Germany, one of Europe’s top research institutions.

You will be based in Copenhagen, some traveling activities between Copenhagen and Oldenburg should be expected (1-2 times a year).

In addition, to foster in-depth collaboration with the University of Oldenburg, a four-month secondment is planned for the second or third year of the project.

About the Position
The PhD project aims to enhance hearing aid performance by developing advanced algorithms that integrate model-based and learning-based approaches for estimating acoustic transfer functions around and inside the ear.

These transfer functions describe how sound propagates between hearing aid microphones, speakers, and the ear canal. Accurate and individualized modeling is crucial for enabling key features in hearing aids, ultimately improving sound quality and user comfort.

You will:

  • Work on innovative solutions for hearing technology using audio signal processing and machine learning, including algorithm design, implementation, and experimental validation.
  • Write scientific papers for international conferences and journals.
  • Participate in the research meetings and seminars at the Department of Medical Physics and Acoustics, University of Oldenburg.
  • Gain experience in both academic and industrial research.
  • Be supervised by Dr. Meng Guo (Oticon), Dr. Anders Meng (Oticon), and Prof. Dr. Simon Doclo (University of Oldenburg).

What We Offer

  • Have taken specialized courses in at least one of the following disciplines: Digital signal processing, audio signal processing, machine learning, and control theory.
  • Programming skills in Matlab, Python, or similar.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both oral and written.

Knowledge of feedback cancellation, echo cancellation, or active noise control is a plus.

As a person, you thrive both independently and in collaboration. You enjoy tackling complex technical challenges and gaining deep insights. Your approach is systematic, structured, and analytical. At the same time, you are open-minded, self-driven, and confident in finding the optimal solution through constructive dialogue with others.
