Organizational context
Access to reliable, timely, relevant and accurate data on forcibly displaced and stateless populations is essential to enhance their protection and support the achievement of durable solutions. The Global Data Service oversees the production of global statistics on refugees and other populations affected by forced displacement and statelessness and supports the development and implementation of international statistical standards and guidance, including through its participation in the Expert Group on Refugee, IDP and Statelessness Statistics (EGRISS).

GDS hosts the EGRISS Secretariat in Copenhagen. With a mandate from the UN Statistical Commission, EGRISS leads global efforts to promote the statistical inclusion of refugees, internally displaced persons, and stateless persons in national data systems through implementation of the International Recommendations on Refugee, IDP and Statelessness

Statistics, developed in 2018, 2020 and 2023 respectively. Together, these three sets of Recommendations provide a comprehensive international framework for the inclusion of forcibly displaced and stateless populations in official statistics and national data systems.

The EGRISS Secretariat supports and coordinates the activities of the wider group, which currently includes 62 countries and 40 international and regional organisations. This includes activities undertaken through the Technical Subgroup on Regional Engagement and Capacity Development (TSG1) and the Technical Subgroup on Methodological Research and Guidance Development (TSG2).

Currently working under its fourth consecutive mandate (2026–2030), EGRISS’ work focuses on enabling implementation of the Recommendations and updating them based on lessons learned from implementation. Key priorities include advocacy and dissemination, capacity strengthening, methodological research, monitoring implementation progress, promoting peer learning and supporting collaboration among national, regional and international stakeholders.

A central component of this work is the Global Annual Inclusion (GAIN) Survey, EGRISS’ global monitoring mechanism for documenting implementation of the Recommendations. The GAIN survey captures examples of statistical inclusion of refugees, IDPs and stateless persons in national statistical systems and supports annual reporting, identification of good practices, peer learning, knowledge dissemination and future development of EGRISS guidance and standards.

With support from the Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement (JDC), the EGRISS Secretariat continues to strengthen its monitoring and learning functions by improving participation in GAIN, enhancing quality and coverage of the monitoring database, supporting dissemination of lessons learned and exploring innovative approaches to improve monitoring and reporting processes.

The position
We are seeking an intern to assist the EGRISS Secretariat in a range of activities with a focus on implementation and continuous improvement of the GAIN survey and management of the associated monitoring database. As part of EGRISS’ fourth phase of work, particular emphasis is being placed on monitoring implementation of the Recommendations, strengthening coordination and peer learning among stakeholders, improving participation in GAIN, capturing lessons learned from implementation processes and supporting the development of evidence-based guidance and reporting products.

The intern will work closely with EGRISS Secretariat staff and relevant EGRISS members to support GAIN survey implementation, improve participation and response rates across countries, regions and institutions, maintain monitoring and reporting tools, contribute to annual reporting and dissemination activities, and support exploratory work on the use of innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence, to strengthen monitoring and knowledge management processes.

The internship will provide hands-on experience in international statistical standards, monitoring and evaluation, survey implementation, data analysis, reporting, stakeholder coordination and innovation in official statistics.
The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the EGRISS Secretariat and in close collaboration with other Secretariat colleagues and relevant units within the GDS, as well as the growing network of GAIN respondents.
