PhD scholarship in Generation of Optical Quantum States in Silicon Core Fibers - DTU Electro

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Within the topic of generation of optical quantum states in silicon core fibers, funded by the independent research fund Denmark, at DTU Electro, the Technical University of Denmark, we are seeking a candidate for a PhD position, to research generation of optical quantum states, specifically photon pairs and entangled photon states in optical fibers comprising a silicon core. The aim is to demonstrate generation such quantum state and potentially demonstrate applications within quantum metrology as sensing and imaging.

The PhD student will work together in a team working towards the above mentioned goal. The team is part of the group working within the general topic of fiber optics, devices and nonlinear effects. The research activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other projects in the group as well as with other activities at the department. The main supervisor will be Professor Karsten Rottwitt, DTU Electro.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Research into generation of photon pairs and entangled photons, using four wave mixing involves quantum optics, nonlinear optics and optical waveguide optics. If you are the right candidate, you have knowledge within as many of these areas as possible. In addition, the research will be mainly experimental but supported with numerical/theoretical predictions. Consequently, through your education, you have demonstrated an interest in experimental optics.

To be considered, you need to have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in photonics or electrical engineering or applied physics or similar.

Further obligations: If you join us as a PhD student you should expect to conduct a secondment for a minimum duration of 3 months, visiting an international acknowledged collaborator. Additionally, you will contribute to teaching activities at the department for a limited amount of time and is expected to participate in outreach activities as well as dissemination to popular press.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and you as a PhD student at DTU will be enrolled in a PhD degree programme at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. Application procedure
Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 2 July 2026 (23:59 Danish time).Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply now", fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file. The file must include:

  • A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) including official description of grading scale

You may apply prior to obtaining your master's degree but cannot begin before having received it.

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply. As DTU works with research in critical technology, which is subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates for the position.
