PhD scholarship in Fabrication and Characterization of Josephson Field Effect Transistors - DTU Nanolab

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

If you are passionate about quantum devices and nanofabrication and want to contribute to cutting-edge research in superconducting electronics, this PhD project offers a unique opportunity.

At DTU Nanolab, you will work at the forefront of quantum engineering to develop Josephson field-effect transistors (JoFETs), combining advanced materials development, nanofabrication, and low-temperature physics. You will gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art facilities and help establish new experimental capabilities for quantum device characterization.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to develop and fabricate superconductor-semiconductor junctions, and Josephson field-effect transistors. In addition, you will perform low-temperature electrical characterization of these devices. You will work closely with colleagues at DTU Nanolab and in collaboration with Professor Charles M. Marcus at the Niels Bohr Institute.

Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Develop superconducting alloyed materials for hybrid quantum devices
  • Fabricate nanostructures including gate-controlled Josephson junctions
  • Establish high-transparency contacts to semiconductor inversion layers or quantum wells
  • Perform low-temperature electrical measurements of devices (down to mK temperatures)
  • Set up and operate an electrical characterization platform based on a Kiutra cryostat
  • Analyze experimental data and contribute to scientific publications
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners

You have a strong background in quantum physics and solid-state physics, along with experience in nanofabrication techniques such as lithography and thin-film deposition.

It is an advantage if you have experience with low-temperature (cryogenic) electrical measurements, are familiar with low-noise electronics and measurement techniques, and have experience with GHz-frequency electrical measurements.

You must have a two-year master's degree in physics, engineering physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, or a similar field (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education.

Assessment
The assessment of applicants will be based on academic achievements, relevant experience within nanofabrication and quantum device physics, and demonstrated ability to conduct experimental research. Emphasis will be placed on motivation, independence, and the ability to collaborate in an international research environment.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years. Expected start date is 1 August 2026 (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time PhD position.

Application procedure
Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 9 July 2026 (23:59 Danish time). Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply now", fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file. The file must include:

  • A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) including official description of grading scale

In addition to the required documents, applicants are encouraged to include:

  • A brief statement of research interests (max. 1 page)
  • Documentation of relevant laboratory or experimental experience (if available)
  • Contact information for references

You may apply prior to obtaining your master's degree but cannot begin before having received it.

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply. As DTU works with research in critical technology, which is subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates for the position.
