Statens Serum Institut, SSI, and the Department of Sequencing and Bioinformatics invite applications from an ambitious and internationally recognized researcher who can contribute to and strengthen our research activities in molecular microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, pathogen genomics, and One Health.
The successful candidate will join a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment and will have the opportunity to lead key research initiatives on the human microbiome, staphylococcal colonization, and the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance in relation to health and disease.
The Position
The successful candidate will lead and develop an internationally recognized research program focused on antimicrobial resistance and bacterial pathogens of public health importance. Emphasis will be placed on integrating molecular microbiology, genomics, epidemiology, and translational public health research to better understand pathogen reservoirs, colonization dynamics, transmission pathways, and opportunities for prevention.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an internationally recognized research program and foster strategic collaborations between SSI and leading academic institutions, public health agencies, and research organizations worldwide. The position is intended to strengthen SSI’s international scientific profile, expand opportunities for collaborative research, and enhance the institute’s ability to attract competitive external funding.
The candidate will work closely with SSI researchers and national and international collaborators to strengthen Denmark’s position as a global leader in pathogen genomics and One Health research.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading internationally competitive research within antimicrobial resistance and molecular microbiology
- Developing and coordinating multidisciplinary research initiatives involving microbiology, genomics, bioinformatics, epidemiology, and public health
- Securing competitive external research funding from Danish and international funding agencies
- Supervising postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and other early-career scientists
- Contributing to scientific leadership and strategic development within SSI
- Strengthening national and international research collaborations
- Promoting translation of research findings into public health practice, surveillance, and prevention strategies
Qualifications
You have a master´s degree. Please note that your master’s degree must be equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc + 180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc).
Applicants must have:
- A PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, infectious diseases, public health, veterinary medicine, or a related discipline
- Qualifications corresponding to appointment at the professor level
- Several years of independent research experience following postdoctoral training
- An internationally recognized research profile in molecular microbiology and antimicrobial resistance
- A substantial publication record in leading international peer-reviewed journals
- Demonstrated success in obtaining significant competitive external research funding as principal investigator from national and/or international funding agencies
- Extensive experience leading multidisciplinary and multi-institutional research collaborations
- Experience supervising doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers
- Excellent communication skills in English
Preferred Qualifications - The ideal candidate will additionally demonstrate:
- Expertise in bacterial genomics, molecular epidemiology, and pathogen population biology
- Experience applying genomic and bioinformatic approaches to infectious disease research
- A strong track record of One Health research spanning human, animal, food, and environmental systems
- Experience translating research findings into public health impact, surveillance, policy, or prevention strategies
- Leadership roles within international research networks, scientific societies, advisory groups, editorial boards, or major collaborative consortia
- Experience securing funding from highly competitive national and international programs, including governmental, philanthropic, and multinational funding agencies
About the Department of Sequencing and Bioinformatics
The Department of Sequencing and Bioinformatics at SSI is part of Denmark’s national diagnostic infectious disease preparedness and is responsible for sequencing and bioinformatic analyses of a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms. The department comprises approximately 30 employees, including bioinformaticians, laboratory technicians, and researchers.
Research is an essential component of the department’s work, and we aim to strengthen this area by appointing an additional researcher to the team.

The successful candidate will have opportunities to work with leading scientists across Denmark and internationally and contribute to research programs with direct relevance to infectious disease prevention and public health.
Terms of Employment
You will be employed as a Senior Research Scientist under the current collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Your scientific qualifications will be assessed by an expert academic panel according to standard procedures for researchers with scientific duties at government institutions.
For the purpose of assessing research qualifications, a list of publications and 3–5 scientific works must be submitted. The research qualifications will be evaluated by an academic assessment committee appointed in accordance with the applicable job structure for scientific staff with research duties at sector research institutions.
The position is part-time, 18.5 hours per week and is limited to 2 year.
