Project Manager for SBC (English)
Ibsen Photonics
Location: Farum, Denmark | Level: MSc / PhD / Postdoc, with proven Project Manager skills
The Mission: Develop the Next Generation of SBC Systems
At Ibsen Photonics, we are developing Spectral Beam Combining (SBC) modules for high-power laser architectures. We are looking for a hands-on Project or Business Manager to lead our effort to design and build a strong SBC platform for European defence applications.
This role challenges you to close the gap from high cost demonstrators to low cost, industrially scalable modules that enable widespread use of directed energy c-UAS effectors for layered defence. You will work with your team to design world class products; spend time in the lab to iterate rapidly from idea to reality, and engage with customers and partners to propose and develop custom solutions to match their requirements.
Key responsibilities:
- Project Management: Lead team and drive progress in line with customer requirements.
- Customer Interaction: Participate in meetings with international customers and partners, and work closely with them on joint development, prototyping and testing.
- Tech Design, Assembly & Test: Work hands-on with your team to develop compact, efficient SBC modules using Ibsen’s world-class transmission gratings, optimising optical beam paths, and managing thermal effects and mechanical constraints.
- Competence Building: Develop world leading expertise in beam shaping and steering for high power directed energy systems, including target locking and handling of atmospheric turbulence.
What you bring:
You are a people-minded, proactive project manager, who thrives in a highly paced environment. Ideally, you possess:
- Education: MSc, PhD or Postdoc in Optics, Photonics, Laser Physics, or a related field.
- Project management skills and experience:
- Proven project management success from industry
- Strong communication skills and a proven ability to motivate top-class engineering teams to deliver excellent results
- Persistency and sense of urgency, with a fine balance of patience and impatience
- Ability to navigate complex projects with many interrelated activities and a constant need to prioritise and focus
- Technical skills and experience:
- Hands on lab experience with high power fiber lasers and free-space optical systems.
- Good understanding of Gaussian optics, SBC and CBC beam combining techniques, beam propagation, and high-power laser effects.
- Experience with thermal management and mechanical design is a further advantage
- Security Clearance: You are a European citizen with no family ties to Russia or Russian allied territories, and you have a clean criminal record.
Why join Ibsen Photonics?
- High Impact: Your success will have a direct impact on the future of high power laser systems for defence.
- Freedom to Innovate: We value drive and initiative – if you see a better or faster way to meet customer requirements, we are there to support you.
- Danish Engineering Culture: Enjoy a supportive and meaningful environment with fast decision-making, teamwork, knowledge sharing, and a healthy work-life balance.
