Atmospheric chemistry plays a central role in air quality, climate and human health, but many of the chemical and physical processes remain unexplored. Experimental studies under controlled laboratory conditions, combined with long-term atmospheric observations and field measurements, provide essential tools for understanding these processes and their environmental consequences.
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen conducts experimental research in atmospheric physical chemistry using advanced analytical instrumentation, atmospheric simulation chambers and field measurements. A central element is the Danish contribution to ACTRIS (Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure), a European research infrastructure program providing long-term observations and experimental facilities for atmospheric research. Our ACTRIS facilities include an atmospheric simulation chamber and a rooftop atmospheric monitoring station, together with instrumentation for studying gas-phase, aerosol and multiphase atmospheric chemistry.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in physical chemistry, atmospheric chemistry or a related field to conduct cutting-edge experimental research in atmospheric physical chemistry and contribute to the continued development and scientific use of our ACTRIS research infrastructure. The successful candidate will be able to develop an independent research profile based on their own expertise and interests, while working collaboratively within the atmospheric chemistry group and the wider Department of Chemistry.
The candidate will design and conduct laboratory and field studies of atmospheric chemical processes, including experiments using atmospheric simulation chambers, and will contribute to the development of new experimental methods, measurement capabilities and scientific instrumentation. The position will also involve operation and further development of the ACTRIS aerosol chamber and rooftop atmospheric monitoring station, including instrument calibration, quality assurance, data analysis and implementation of new measurement capabilities.
As a four-year member of the Department, the successful candidate is expected to contribute substantially to its broader scientific activities. This includes publishing research in international peer-reviewed journals, developing new research directions and collaborations, contributing to national and international research proposals, and participating in the supervision of research projects. The candidate will also contribute to teaching and laboratory instruction in general, physical and atmospheric chemistry.
The candidate should have a strong experimental background in atmospheric chemistry or physical chemistry and a demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Experience with atmospheric simulation chambers, atmospheric measurements and advanced scientific instrumentation is highly desirable. Experience with scientific programming and quantitative data analysis is expected. Experience developing or maintaining scientific instrumentation, supervising students, teaching university courses, participating in international research infrastructures such as ACTRIS, and contributing to competitive research funding applications will be considered an advantage.

The four-year duration of the position provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to establish and develop an independent research profile while making a substantial contribution to the long-term development of experimental atmospheric chemistry at the University of Copenhagen.
