The research project Advancing Bildung in School: Science and Technology in SHAPE (ABIS) invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position based in the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas at Aarhus University. ABIS is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and is a collaboration between four partner institutions, with the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) serving as the lead institution. ABIS is an empirically grounded research project that explores how humanities and social science subjects in schools (SHAPE subjects) can develop ways of knowing about science and technology that contribute to Bildung [dannelse]. The position is expected to begin from February 1 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
The position contributes to the theoretical and innovative work of the ABIS project, which develops the epistemological and didactical foundations for advancing Bildung through the integration of science and technology within SHAPE subjects

To support this work, we are seeking a scholar with a solid background in fields such as Science Studies, Educational Research, Subject education, History of Ideas and Philosophy, or other relevant disciplines.

The two-year postdoctoral position focuses on bridging research on scientific and technological literacy with Bildung traditions and conceptualisations, thereby building the foundations for didactical frameworks that integrate science and technology within SHAPE subjects focusing here mainly on History/historie, L1/dansk, and Social Science/samfundsfag.

The research is expected to result in high-quality international publications, including both co-authored and single-authored works, that advance scholarship on the relationships between scientific literacy, technological literacy, and Bildung. Expected research outputs also include contributing to the organisation of academic conferences, as well as a range of outreach and knowledge dissemination activities, including the ABIS project teacher education program

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in history of ideas, science studies, philosophy, educational research, subject education, or related areas relevant to the position or they must document equal qualifications.

The selected candidate will be expected to:

• Document an international research profile
• Be well-versed in research on scientific and technological literacy, as well as in debates concerning the Nature of Science and the Nature of Technology, their educational implications, and their relationship to Bildung
• Have a well-developed understanding of the epistemological dimensions of both science and the humanities and their implications in didactical contexts
• Have an excellent command of English for international academic publishing and a good command of Danish, as the empirical basis and intervention activities of the ABIS project are closely connected to the Danish educational context from primary to upper-secondary levels and require engagement with Danish-language sources, participants, and stakeholders
• Be motivated to work closely with both junior and senior colleagues and thrive in a collaborative research environment devoted to generating innovative knowledge and practice on the integration of science and technology in Bildung in SHAPE subjects
• Have a genuine interest in engaging with and learning from stakeholders beyond academia, including teachers, policymakers and other professionals involved in education

The work environment
The selected applicant will be based at the School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas, Jens Christian Skous vej 7, 8000 Aarhus C. The Department of employs about 25 tenured full and associate professors, plus post-doctoral researchers and a cohort of approximately 15 PhD students.

The department will serve as the primary workplace, and regular presence is expected in order to support active participation in the research environment, including seminars, project meetings, and collaboration with colleagues. As the ABIS project is also anchored at the University of Southern Denmark, the selected applicant should also expect to participate regularly in project meetings, workshops, and other relevant activities with colleagues there.

The selected candidate should expect a certain amount of travel due to the project’s cross-institutional nature.

Terms of employment

• Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
• Salary and terms of employment are governed by the Cirkulære om overenskomst for akademikere i staten (in Danish). You will be employed as post doctoral fellow at base pay level 4–8 with additional supplements in accordance with the Cirkulære om protokollat om visse ansættelsesvilkår for videnskabeligt personale ved universiteter (in Danish).
