Postdoc in Dynamic Optimization of Sustainable Energy Systems - DTU Management

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

The Climate and Energy Policy Division at DTU's Department of Technology, Management and Economics (DTU Management) offers a postdoc position in the Energy Markets and Finance section.

The section researches the enablers of the green transition, focusing on energy market design and policies, network regulation, and financing green investments to ensure viable and carbon-free systems.

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated researcher with a background in operations research, management science, dynamic optimization, applied game theory, energy economics, or a related discipline. The successful candidate will join a new CETPartnership project that develops decision-support methodologies for the operation and flexibility of future industry-integrated energy systems.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Future energy systems are becoming increasingly complex due to the rapid electrification of industry, increasing shares of renewable energy, growing interactions between electricity, hydrogen and other energy carriers, and greater market uncertainty. Addressing these challenges requires new optimization methods capable of supporting robust and economically efficient decision-making across multiple sectors and time scales.

The successful candidate will conduct research at the interface of dynamic optimization, energy economics and operations research. While the research will contribute to a European collaborative project on integrated energy systems, the position offers considerable freedom to develop novel methodologies with broader relevance to decision-making under uncertainty and quantitative management science.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will contribute to the development of advanced models and decision-support tools for planning and operating future energy systems, working closely with researchers from leading European universities, research institutes and industry.

The postdoc will have two major focus areas:

  • Methodological research: Develop and apply advanced optimization approaches for decision-making under uncertainty, e.g. stochastic optimization, robust control, risk-aware decision-making, or data-driven methods for solving large-scale optimization problems.
  • Applications to future energy systems: Apply these methods to analyze the planning and operation of integrated energy systems, electricity markets, industrial flexibility, sector coupling, and low-carbon transition pathways. The work may include economic evaluation of flexibility, market design, investment planning, and operational decision support under uncertainty.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A PhD degree in operations research, management science, applied economics (game theory, energy economics, or a related field).
  • Strong background in mathematical optimization and quantitative modelling.
  • Experience with optimization under uncertainty or data-driven decision-support methods is highly desirable.
  • Programming experience in optimization software and scientific programming languages (e.g. Julia, Python, Matlab or similar).
  • Interest in developing methodological research with practical applications to sustainable energy systems.
  • Excellent communication and dissemination skills, both written and oral, in English

The position provides an excellent opportunity to develop high-impact methodological research while addressing important societal challenges related to the energy transition. The successful candidate is expected to publish in leading international journals in the field and to contribute to the development of reproducible research tools.
