Hosting Team & Department
Coloplast R&D/Center of Excellence / engineering analysis. The student will be enrolled in the ongoing activities and discussions within the Simulation Team, focusing on virtual prototyping and modelling.

Project Description
Reliable polymer material models are essential for simulation-driven product development. Conventional material characterization requires separate specimens for tension, compression, relaxation, cyclic loading, and other load cases, while differences in molding conditions, material flow, cooling history, and specimen geometry can introduce unwanted variation between tests.

This project aims to develop a single, process-controlled, injection-molded specimen that enables several mechanical load cases, thereby producing more consistent experimental datasets and reducing uncertainty caused by specimen-to-specimen variation. The specimen will be designed to characterize nonlinear, time-dependent, plastic, and damage-related polymer behavior. It should also enable testing of interactions between different polymer materials, including contact, friction, adhesion, overmolding, and mechanically interlocked interfaces.

The student will develop specimen concepts using mechanical design and finite element simulation, after which selected concepts will be prototyped (and potentially manufactured), mechanically tested, and evaluated using experimental measurements. The resulting data will support the calibration and validation of constitutive material and interface models.

The project will deliver a unified testing methodology for more reliable simulation of single-material and multi-material polymer-based products.
