Postdoc in Vertebrate Genome Assembly and Comparative Genomics

Københavns Universitet

The Globe Institute
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

University of Copenhagen

The Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics at the Globe Institute wishes to hire a postdoctoral researcher in a 30 month position to work in the area of vertebrate comparative genomics, with a primary focus on generating high-quality, chromosome-scale reference genome assemblies from diverse vertebrate species. The position will principally involve genome assembly, curation and quality assessment using state-of-the-art long-read and scaffolding approaches, followed by comparative evolutionary analyses aimed at understanding patterns of genome evolution across vertebrates. The project will combine large-scale genomic data generation with computational analyses of genome structure, gene content and evolutionary change.

The postdoc’s duties will include research within comparative genomics as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Qualified applicants must have demonstrated prior expertise in the following areas:

  • PhD in genomics, bioinformatics, evolutionary biology, computational biology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with de novo genome assembly, preferably using long-read sequencing data.
  • Experience with genome assembly quality assessment, curation and validation.
  • Strong competence in bioinformatics and computational genomics, including working in Linux/Unix environments.
  • Proficiency in at least one relevant programming or scripting language, such as Python, R, Bash or Perl.
  • Experience handling and analysing large genomic datasets.
  • Experience with comparative genomics and/or evolutionary genomic analyses.
  • Good understanding of genome biology and molecular evolution.
  • Ability to work independently, troubleshoot computational workflows and manage complex analyses.
  • Good written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate scientific results clearly.

Further information on the Department is linked at www.globe.ku.dk. Inquiries about the position can be made to Prof Tom Gilbert ([email protected])

The position is open from 1 March 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.
