STUDENT PROJECT: Electromagnetic FEM simulation of motor and compressor

This is a master project spanning two semesters, including in-company project.
To ensure long lifetimes of bearings in electrical machines driven by frequency converters it is necessary to ensure that the shaft voltage at the bearings stay within certain bounds. This shaft voltage is determined by the design of the motor and the enclosure, in combination with the PWM voltage applied to the motor terminals.
Bitzer electronics would like to investigate how FEM simulation can be used to predict the shaft voltages at the bearings and used as a design verification tool.
To do this we propose the following objectives:
// Model the compressor motor and enclosure using a FEM tool, to predict shaft voltage at the bearings.
// Measure the shaft voltage of an electric machine in SDU’s lab and compare the results with measurement from Bitzer electronics test lab.
// Verify model with lab measurements.
// Analyze shaft voltage amplitude with respect to changes in motor design.
The project requires two semesters and could be executed as an in-company project that is extended into a master project. We are looking for a student with drive and good understanding of physics. You must be able to on your own acquire the theoretical knowledge needed to succeed in the project.
