Do you want to study how people search for solutions and make decisions - and how their strategies compare with those of teams and AI? We are looking for a research-oriented student assistant, potentially from cognitive science, for the AUFF project Designing Organizational Search: A Tournament Study at the Department of Management. Using a game-based platform, we study complex problem-solving by individuals, teams, AI agents, and potentially human-AI teams. You will help design and develop the platform as a research instrument and analyze the processes that shape performance.

What you’ll be working on
Please note that you do not need to be able to do all of the following, but preferably at least some of them.

  • Help develop and test the project's web-based problem-solving game, including task design, front and backend, experimental conditions, participant flow, and behavioral data logging.
  • Contribute to research design by reviewing theory and translating concepts such as exploration, heuristics, learning, coordination, and information sharing into experimental measures.
  • Help run pilot studies comparing how individuals, teams, and AI agents search, make decisions, adapt and get stuck, including configuring AI-agent conditions for controlled comparisons.

What we imagine you bring

  • A genuine research interest in individual and collective cognition: how people search complex problem spaces, decide under uncertainty, learn, and coordinate - and how these processes compare with AI. You are likely studying cognitive science, psychology, behavioral science, human-computer interaction, or another field with a strong behavioral focus.
  • Interest or experience in empirical research, such as experimental design, behavioral data, or quantitative analysis. Some programming or platform-building experience (e.g., Python, JavaScript/HTML, APIs, Git, or experiment software) is useful, but we are looking primarily for research motivation rather than a purely technical profile.

What you can expect from us

  • Close guidance and supervision - we don’t expect you to know it all from day one
  • Flexible working hours and contract length (we’ll make this fit in with your studies)
  • The chance to contribute to research linking cognitive science, organizational design, and AI
  • Potential to connect the work with your own Master's thesis later on

Practical info

  • Starting date: October 15 or as soon as possible
  • Location: Department of Management, Aarhus BSS, Universitetsparken 61, 8000 Aarhus C. You can work remotely most of the time - although we expect you to be present at work one day a week.
  • Hours: 12 hours

You are welcome to contact Carsten Bergenholtz at e-mail if you have any questions about the position.

If you have technical questions regarding the application process itself, please contact HR Coordinator Line Greve Brunhøi at e-mail.

If this sounds like you, submit a short, motivated application + CV (include your study programme and semester). Please briefly describe a research question about individual, team, or AI problem-solving that interests you, and mention any relevant experience.

Requirements and terms
You will be employed as a part-time student assistant on an hourly basis under the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Organisations of Public Employees – Denmark (OAO-S Collective Agreement, State Sector), as well as the organisational agreement for clerical employees, laboratory technicians and IT staff (HK).

You will be placed as a clerical employee in pay group 2–3, depending on education and qualifications.
