Here’s some inspiration for how to make your exercise more affordable, or even free.
Get a discount on fitness
Exercising in a gym can be expensive, but most actually have special offers and discounts for students. Several gyms, for example, have a special offer where you can save money, if you choose to train only in the gym in question, or special offers for students.
The fitness market is very competitive and there are usually always small, independent gyms, trying to compete with the more established chains. They can usually only compete with the price, so check out which gyms are in your area, if you want to find an affordable place to work out.
Companies like Downtown and Spot also sometimes offer discounts on gym or crossfit memberships. You can also check out whether you can train at a discount through your student union or your student job.
Exercise in nature
Working out in a sweaty gym, right next to others groaning and huffing, isn’t always the greatest. It shouldn’t be an excuse for staying on the couch, as the city and its green areas offers plenty of exciting ways to exercise.
Most of the bigger cities in Denmark have, in recent years, prioritized exercise and fitness in the great outdoors. In Copenhagen, a promenade facilitating both jogging, cycling and roller-skating year-round has been built near Amager Strandpark. In Frederiksberg, Søndermarken has an interactive running route, where a light-up hare follows you around the route and indicates how fast you’re running. You can find more jogging routes here.
Aalborg also has several good jogging routes, such as the light-up route at Skovdalen. You can also find tips and jogging routes for Aarhus and Odense.
Exciting, alternative forms of exercise
Within recent years, a new trend has taken off that’s also a free way to train both your strength and stamina. It’s called Urban Workout and is all about using the city landscapes and public spaces as tools in your training. Some, for example, use a lamppost or playground equipment for pull-ups during their training. It’s all about being creative. In most cities though, the municipality has begun putting up dedicated equipment like bars for pull-ups and the like. You can also find more interesting ways to exercise in the great outdoors here.
If you find leaving your home to exercise especially difficult, you still have plenty of options for keeping your body healthy. You can do different training exercises at home, if you have a training mat and some weights. Additionally, different consoles have developed games for exercising.
