PhD: Digital Twin based verification and optimization of large 2-stroke ship engine parameter sets and live data

MAN Energy Solutions

Are you passionate about cutting-edge technologies and their application in the green transition of maritime transport? Do you want to contribute to the development of innovative engine solutions that are pivotal in decarbonizing the industry? If so, we invite you to join MAN Energy Solutions as a 3-year Industrial PhD candidate.

The PhD Project This PhD position offers you the opportunity to work on an exciting project that integrates advanced simulation tools with digital twin (DT) technology to optimize and verify large 2-stroke engine parameter sets and push the boundaries of digital twin technology for maritime engines.

The aim of this PhD project is to develop and optimize a digital twin to enhance the performance of both the engines in production and operation.

  • Stage 1 – Engine Digital Twin for Production Quality: Enable the current engine simulation platform to develop a digital twin capable of testing parameter consistency in engine production. The outcome is a tool that validates the performance of generated engine parameter sets using our own-developed simulation platform MultiSim.
  • Stage 2 – Engine Digital Twin for Operational Support: Further development to simulate real-world operational conditions of operational engines and develop methods to troubleshoot and refine engine parameters remotely

You will play an important role in:

  • Develop Digital Twin Solutions: You will develop and optimize a DT-based verification tool for 2-stroke dual-fuel engines, ensuring consistency and quality in production and performance during real-world operations.
  • Collaborate with Experts: Work closely with highly skilled engineers in and academic experts in digital twin technology and simulation from SDU.
  • Technical Implementation: Use Python and C/C++ to implement simulation frameworks and tools that allow parameter scaling and scenario descriptions.
  • Dissemination of Results: Present your research at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals. You will also complete and defend a PhD thesis.

We imagine that you:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with strong academic credentials.
  • Have experience with simulation tools.
  • Have experience with control systems, including theoretical background knowledge.
  • Are proficient in Python and C/C++ programming.
  • Are highly motivated, self-driven, and enjoys working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Have excellent communication skills in English.
  • It is an advantage if you have experience with:
    • Data analysis and visualization tools.
    • Working with agile development frameworks (SCRUM, Kanban).

Welcome to the Tools & HILS department We are a team with good unity, where the daily life is characterized by an informal atmosphere and a pleasant social work environment. We arrange several social activities, such as Tour-de-chambre, Teambuilding, DHL-run and ski trip (self-paid), which we hope you are excited to be part of. You will work in close cooperation with skilled and motivated colleagues who are passionate about their job and are looking forward to learn from you – and of course also share their knowledge. One of the main pillars of the work methods of the team is transparency and that multiple heads think better than one. This is expressed by an ever-present openness regarding which assignments are on-going and which steps are planned for the assignment.
