Postdoc in Low Temperature District Heating System for Apartment Buildings - DTU Construct

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

We are seeking a Postdoc to investigate low-temperature heating potential in Greater Copenhagen. You will collaborate with three large district heating providers in developing and testing new data-driven methods and technical solutions. Apply now to contribute to a sustainable energy future.
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering offers a new Postdoc position, “Low Temperature District Heating Systems for Apartment Buildings”.

This Postdoc position involves close cooperation with district heating companies, energy network stakeholders, and the broader building sector. The project focuses on developing and testing data-driven methods to map the readiness of buildings for low-temperature district heating (LTDH), identifying effective booster solutions for building installations, and creating digital twins for simulation purposes. The aim is to determine the optimal technical solutions for implementing LTDH and to explore strategies for consumer engagement and flexibility in building energy management.

As our new Postdoc, you will work with DTU researchers and industry partners to advance knowledge and practical applications of LTDH in apartment buildings. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a sustainable energy future through innovative research and collaboration with key industry players.

This project comprises three key activities aimed at investigating the opportunities for supplying low-temperature district heating to apartment buildings:

  • Mapping and categorization of the LTDH potential in Greater Copenhagen by developing data-driven tools for assessing LTDH readiness of buildings, including aggregation of data and testing of deep learning models.
  • A comparison study of three different technical solutions for hot water production tested through virtual and physical pilots.
  • Investigation of booster solutions as a support to LTDH by virtual and physical pilots.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The required selection criteria include:

  • Strong knowledge of building physics, district heating and HVAC system.
  • Competence in developing AI-based algorithms.
  • Programming knowledge (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB)
  • Experience in working with building and time-series data
  • Fluent English skills, both written and spoken. Ability to publish research results in high-reputation international journals.

Personal characteristics

  • Confidence in working independently and in teams.
  • Ability and willingness to work in inter- and transdisciplinary teams.
