Your role and responsibilities
ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Together with our colleagues in other R&D centers we develop technologies for future products and services for ABB's core businesses. The pulp and paper industry, as a significant consumer of energy and water, faces pressing challenges in reducing its carbon footprint. This thesis will explore pathways for decarbonizing the pulp and paper industry, aiming to identify strategies that maximize emission reductions. By evaluating options such as electrification, automation, and RES integration, also disrupting innovation like foaming, biorefinery, alternative fibers, the research will provide targeted recommendations to help the industry focus resources on the most impactful and cost-effective decarbonization strategies. Details: • Start ASAP for a period of 5 months. • 30 ECTS per student • 1-2 students • On site ABB Corporate Research in Västerås – ABB may cover the accommodation Research topics: Explore comprehensive pathways for decarbonizing the pulp and paper industry, focusing on identifying and implementing the most impactful strategies. Assess a wide range of options across the entire value chain, including disruptive options. Goals: • Identify and evaluate decarbonization pathways • Provide strategic recommendations to help the industry prioritize efforts Approach: • Problem formulation & case study selection • Prior art review • Method, model & algorithm development • Analyze results and draw conclusions
Qualifications for the role
- Motivation to solve real world problems using state-of-the-art methods
- Background in chemical or energy engineering or similar
- Basic knowledge on Python or MATLAB
- Knowledge of heat and power
- Good interpersonal skill
