Postdoc in Functional Cementitious Composites for Structural Health Monitoring - DTU Construct

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

We are seeking a full-time Postdoc on developing functional cementitious composites for structural health monitoring to join us in the Section of Digital Building Technology at DTU Construct. The position is a part of the granted Villum Young Investigator project, ‘‘Alive Concrete’’
Are you excited about smart and functional concrete and looking for the best possible foundation for fulfilling your dreams and ambitions? It is right here in front of you. In the Section of Digital Building Technology (DBT) at DTU Civil and Mechanical Engineering (DTU Construct), you will break new ground for incorporating material science, manufacturing techniques, and modelling to develop novel self-sensing and self-healing mechanisms for cementitious materials. The Postdoc research is part of the granted Villum Young Investigator project, ‘‘Alive Concrete’’.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to conduct experiments on exploring different functionalization processes of micro and nanoparticles, with particular interest in carbonous materials, for developing multifunctional cementitious composites. You will gain hands-on experience with advanced equipment and computational modelling tools to analyse the impact of the functionalization process on both micro- and macro-scale properties of the composites. As a part of this project, your responsibilities will encompass the following tasks:

  • Experimental work on developing and optimizing novel functional materials for self-healing and self-sensing cementitious composites.
  • Multi-scale characterization of cementitious materials using, e.g., spectroscopic techniques, X-ray-based techniques, electrical measurements, and mechanical testing.
  • Organic and inorganic chemistry (synthesis and modelling).
  • Close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Research and teaching efforts at a section and departmental level as appropriate and relevant (e.g., teach and supervise PhD and MSc student projects).
  • Dissemination of your research through publications in “top rank journals of the field” and attendance to conferences.

Qualification:

  • Background within chemistry, construction materials, or related fields.
  • Experience with synthesizing micro/nanomaterials and functional polymers.
  • Experience with the early-age characterization techniques of cementitious composites
  • Experience with molecular dynamics simulations.

Flexibility is essential. We are looking for a team player who can also work independently, who is motivated to help and be part of a dynamic research environment; and, who has a positive, supportive and creative outlook. We expect you to have good communication and personal interaction skills and to be fluent in English.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
