Research Scientist – Radiation Detector Technology

SINTEF

Join our team to develop sensors of the future!

SINTEF Microsystems and Nanotechnology (MiNaLab) (www.minalab.no) is a leading provider of R&D and fabrication services in silicon-based microsystems, including feasibility studies, device design, process development, process integration, process, and device simulation, prototyping and small-scale production. We work in close collaboration with national and international companies and research organisations to develop state-of-the-art and tailor-made sensors and actuators used in a wide range of application areas such as aviation and space, consumer electronics, scientific, medical and industrial instrumentation, renewable energy, production monitoring and industrial sorting, biomedical and environmental technology. We have dedicated research groups covering the fields of Radiation detectors, MEMS, Microoptics, BioMEMS, Medical Sensors and Piezoelectric Microsystems.

We are a highly innovative environment with strong focus on bringing technology from concept stage to market in close cooperation with industry and research institutions across the world, as well as through commercialization of our own technology via licensing and spin-offs.

We are now looking for a Research Scientist within Radiation Detector Technology
We are seeking a candidate with experience and interest in semiconductor (primarily silicon) radiation detectors that can help us in developing our portfolio on custom-made photodetectors (including APDs, SPADs, SiPMs) as well as soft X-ray and particle detectors such as microstrip/pixel detectors, Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGAD), Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) and 3D detectors. The work will include development and production, process integration, numerical simulations, sensor design, sensor characterization, funding acquisition and project management. Here you will be part of a project team responsible for delivering high quality R&D and sensor production to our industrial and academic partners. You should have the ambition and capability to take on a role in further developing the technological forefronts and expanding the activities within our group, both on the technical side and the business side.

You should be dedicated and self-motivated, proactive and creative.

We are looking for candidates matching several of the following qualifications:

  • Ph.D in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Solid knowledge of semiconductor device physics and fabrication processes
  • Experience in design and development of silicon photodetectors and/or other types of semiconductor radiation detectors
  • Familiarity with cleanroom environment and CMOS fabrication tools and methods
  • Experience in semiconductor device and process simulation tools (TCAD)
  • Experience in characterisation of radiation detectors and photodetectors
  • Experience in detector packaging/assembly or ASIC-based detector readout electronics
  • Experience with photonic quantum sensing or related topics
  • Familiarity with applications of radiation detectors in big science experiments (such as high energy physics experiments, synchrotrons and XFELs, and spallation neutron sources) or industry
  • Scientific and industrial network, and good understanding of industry needs and markets

In addition to technical-scientific competence, we are seeking candidates with the following skills and qualifications:

  • Team player
  • High focus on quality and a systematic approach
  • Ability to take initiative and to generate new ideas
  • Ability to develop novel components or concepts
  • Ability to interact and work in close cooperation with customers
  • Experience from industry
  • Good communication skills in English is required. Knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is desirable, but not required.

We offer:

  • Exciting and challenging work.
  • The opportunity for in-depth research and development.
  • Creative and engaging working environment.
  • Competitive salary.
  • Company pension- and insurance scheme.
  • Flexible working hours.
