Academic Technical staff within Physics
Syddansk Universitet (SDU)
SDU Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy invites applications for a position as Specialkonsulent within the physics section.
You will primarily be engaged in working in the group of Francesca Serra on liquid crystal order in cells and collective behavior. Just as liquid crystal molecules align with each other, so do elongated cells, and this impacts their organization and physiological behavior.
Your work in Francesca Serra’s group will include
- Developing protocols and best practices for growing and maintaining different cell lines.
- Utilizing different types of optical microscopy techniques to image the cells and various components at the subcellular level, and analyze microscopy data.
- Helping with the micro-fabrication of cell substrates
- Helping to coordinate the organization of the lab and provide laboratory training and supervision of staff and students
- Supporting the strategic decisions of the group leader
- Supporting networking activities and collaborations
- Academic writing, publication of papers and research communication at conferences
In addition, the position includes engagement and responsibilities at the departmental level, including:
- coordinating the organization study groups and mentor pairing for the first year physics students
- assist the physics faculty in initiatives that increase the recruitment and retention of students
The position thus holds a high level of responsibility, but also comes with influence and opportunity to participate in research at the highest level. The work will be in great part located within Phylife, an interdisciplinary group of scientists who work at the boundary between physics, optics, bioimaging and biology.
Qualifications
To be a suitable candidate, you must have a PhD in physics, biophysics or a closely related discipline.
Furthermore, you are expected to have documented
- practical experience with wet lab work, including tissue and/or cell cultures
- considerable experience with various types of optical microscopy, especially fluorescence and confocal microscopy, hereunder also experience with quantitative analyses of microscopy data
- engagement in teaching and student-related activities, such as supervision/mentoring or outreach activities
Finally, you are also expected to be good at communicating and interacting with people from different fields and backgrounds.
