PhD student for morphological mapping of giant paleo-landslides in Denmark

GEUS - De Nationale Geologiske Undersøgelser for Danmark og Grønland

Are you passionate about understanding the evolution of previously glaciated landscapes and quantifying the role of giant landslides? Do you want to use cutting-edge geodata - such as nationwide high-resolution LiDAR DEMs and advanced analytical tools - in a stimulating work environment?

We invite you to join us for a 3-year fully funded PhD position in an exciting new project at GEUS, conducted in close collaboration with the University of Copenhagen. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

About the position
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to map giant soft-sediment paraglacial landslides in Denmark in a project challenging traditional interpretations of glaciated landscapes. This position is part of the Carlsberg Foundation, Semper Ardens Accelerate grant-funded research project, “Reimagining Previously Glaciated Lands” led by Senior Researcher Kristian Svennevig at GEUS. The project focuses on understanding how previously glaciated terrains were reshaped by paraglacial processes - particularly landslides - after ice-sheet retreat.

You will be admitted to the PhD School of Science, University of Copenhagen, and follow their curriculum for PhD students, which includes various courses and research stays abroad. Assistant Professor Anders Anker Bjørk at the Department of Geosciences, University of Copenhagen, will co-supervise your PhD work.

Who are you?
Our ideal candidate holds a master’s degree in geoscience, physical geography, or a related field and has strong analytical skills and GIS expertise (e.g., spatial analysis, DEM interpretation). The candidate should also have an interest in - and experience with - Quaternary geology, geomorphology, or landslide research. You enjoy working in a lively, multidisciplinary environment and have strong communication and collaboration skills.

You must be able to communicate fluently in English, and since the primary language of the organisation is Danish, you should be prepared to learn Danish.

Meet your new colleagues
You will be joining the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), a dynamic and internationally recognized research institution under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities. GEUS employs a diverse international group of geologists, geophysicists, hydrologists, and environmental researchers, working on a broad range of topics related to various aspects of geoscience.

You will be placed in the Department of Mapping and Mineral Resources and collaborating closely with scientists across GEUS.
