Research support to the oyster hatchery - DTU Aqua

DTU Aqua is looking for a biologist or skilled hatchery technician/lab assistant to support research projects in the DTU Aqua shellfish hatchery in Nykøbing Mors, Denmark, for a temporary employment of 2 years.

DTU Aqua is looking for a colleague to support research projects in the DTU Aqua shellfish hatchery in Nykøbing Mors, Denmark, for a temporary employment of 2 years. You are either a skilled technician or a biologist with interest and flair for practical work in a shellfish hatchery.

The job
The job entails different tasks primarily related to work in the hatchery but also to field studies:

  • Be a key responsible person in hatchery activities making sure that projects are running according to plans.
  • Participate in the maintenance of our hatchery and nursery
  • Participate in maintaining our microalgae culture.
  • Participate in daily tasks relating to sampling and analysis of samples.
  • Participate in the planning process of different experiments and daily tasks.
  • Participate in primary data treatment.
  • Record keeping incl. archiving, processing and reporting basic monitoring data.
  • Rotative on-call duty in weekends and evenings for overall hatchery maintenance of the water system.

We are a small group of people working as a team and we expect that you are willing to contribute where necessary and that you have the capability to adapt to changing tasks. The team working in the hatchery includes senior academic staff, post docs, PhD-students and technicians with various background and to make ends meet, we share a lot of the workload and plan and work as a team.

Our expectations of you
We are looking for a person with an aquaculture technician degree or shellfish hatchery experience and experience with biosecurity measures. We are open to all kinds of educational background and our focus when choosing a candidate is experience in the field and engagement in the tasks.

In this employment you are placed in a key position to support both the researchers and the overall production. You must be able to both maintain the overall overview of the entire project process and be included in the planning with the researchers. There will be rotative weekend work.

The job requires a person with several personal competencies:

  • You are a team player and able to adapt to new tasks and manage stress during crisis.
  • You maintain good communication with your team members with feedback on tasks and general functioning of the hatchery.
  • You are flexible, can quickly get acquainted with new topics, work independently and structured.
  • You are well organized, rigorous, accurate, dedicated, reliable, committed.
  • You are a committed contributor and come up with solutions to support your colleagues in various tasks at DTU Aqua.
  • You are willing to develop competencies to solve new tasks.
  • You have good communication skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • You must be fluent in English.

The job requires a person with knowledge in two or more of the following topics:

  • Marine biology.
  • Plankton production.
  • Shellfish aquaculture production.
  • Biosecurity measures for hatchery production in aquaculture.

What we offer in return
We offer you an exciting position in a dynamic workplace in constant development and upscaling. DTU Aqua works closely with end users. As an aquaculture technician/research assistant, you will have the overall responsibility for the execution of tasks and be part of a binding and developing dialogue with our researchers on the planning and implementation of projects and experiments. However, your main tasks will be to provide a constant flow of monitoring data, maintenance and well-functioning of the hatchery and support the team. The position is opened as a 2 yr. contract period but can depending on funding be re-opened as a time unlimited position.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Or other relevant agreement.

The position is for 2 years.

Section for Coastal Ecology conducts research within the ecology of the coastal zone from nutrient dynamics to fish as well as the coastal zone as a fishing ground and production area for low-trophic aquaculture. Our core research areas are aquaculture of low-trophic species i.e. bivalves and seaweed, fisheries and effects of fishery and seaweed collection in the coastal zone, marine habitats, and their importance in the coastal zone for biodiversity and fish. The results of the research are largely translated into practice through advice to public management and the industry. We have a strong national and international collaboration network of universities, research institutions, and industry.
