Research assistant in Urban Hydrology
Aalborg Universitet (AAU)
Research assistant in Urban Hydrology
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Department of the Built Environment in Aalborg, a position as Research Assistant in the Urban Hydrology Research group is open for appointment from 1 May 2025 to 30 November 2026 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 1 year and 7 months and involves research in urban hydrology with a focus on weather radar rainfall, weather radar nowcasting and stormwater management.
Jobbeskrivelse
The Urban Hydrology Research Group at the Department of the Built Environment is a leading research team specializing in urban hydrology and climate, urban drainage and stormwater management, environmental hydraulics, and weather radar technology and its applications. Among other areas, our work includes developing accurate and reliable rainfall nowcasts, which are essential for predicting hydrological and hydraulic loads in urban drainage systems. These forecasts support effective system control, modeling, and hazard warnings. Weather radar technology provides high-resolution measurements in both time and space, offering significant advantages for rainfall monitoring. Additionally, radar systems detect precipitation before it reaches a specific catchment, enabling near-future rainfall forecasting(nowcasting) and improving predictions of urban water system loads.
Qualification requirements
The successful candidate must hold a relevant master’s degree in civil engineering and have extensive experience in urban drainage, rainfall-runoff processes, and stormwater management. Additionally, strong skills in mathematics, statistics, and programming are expected. The research group develops weather radar algorithms in the MATLAB programming environment; therefore, experience with MATLAB is an advantage.
Experience with weather radar rainfall data and radar data processing is required for this position. The candidate will develop and operate real-time warning systems, making experience with real-time systems essential. Furthermore, a strong interest in, as well as knowledge of and preferably experience with, opportunistic rainfall measurements and remote sensing by satellite is beneficial. The position involves experimental work and experimental design; therefore, the candidate must have experience in experimental research, designing experimental setups, and data analysis.
The Urban Hydrology Research Group is actively involved in the Water and Environment and Physical Geography B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs at the department. Relevant teaching or supervisory experience within these programs is preferred. Additionally, knowledge of and experience with Geographic Information Systems(GIS) is required.
Appointment to Research Assistant may be for a period of up to three years. Reappointment may be made, but a Research Assistant can only be appointed to Research Assistant for a period of maximum three years.
