At the Faculty of Engineering and Science (ENG), Department of Materials and Production at Aalborg University one or more positions as Assistant Professor in Model-based Manufacturing Systems are open for appointment from 1 May 2025 to 30 April 2028 or soon hereafter. The Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department’s mission is to meet the future’s demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials’ applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The Department features several strong, international, and innovative research groups that comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applied research. The activities encompass research and education in materials, mechanics, physics, production techniques, robotics, industrial management, and innovation. The laboratory facilities are world-class, and research activities are often in collaboration with industry. The positions will be within the Department’s Section of Production in one of the following research groups: Robotics and Automation, Center for Industrial Production, or Mass Customization, in the main Aalborg campus.

The Assistant Professorship(s) are part of a strategic effort to strengthen our core capabilities in model-based approaches to manufacturing systems, and technologies, and enabling data-driven operations management decisions. We seek candidates with diverse interests and competencies in this broad domain. Depending on the profile of the individual applicant, the focus could range from individual production processes to complete manufacturing systems, and even entire supply chain systems.
Experience in research within one or preferably more of the following topics is desired:
- Modelling production systems
- Circular manufacturing system architecture
- Supply chain modelling
- Data-driven Operations Management
- Digital Twin Systems
- Enterprise systems and databases
- AI for manufacturing
- Robotics& Embodied AI
- Virtual factories/factories of the future
- Advanced manufacturing technologies
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will conduct high-quality research within model-based systems engineering, with emphasis on developing innovative solutions for manufacturing systems. You will be expected to build and maintain a strong research program, including securing external research funding through grants and industry partnerships. Publishing research findings in leading international journals and conferences is a crucial aspect of the role. You will actively collaborate with academic as well as industrial partners on applied research projects and participate in international research networks to enhance the department's global research profile.
Teaching responsibilities include delivering courses in both undergraduate and graduate programs, specifically within the B.Sc. ENG programs in Global Business Engineering or Robotics, as well as M.Sc. programs in Management Engineering, Robotics, or Manufacturing Technology. You will supervise student projects at both bachelor's and master's levels, providing guidance and mentorship to develop the next generation of engineers. The position requires developing and maintaining course materials that reflect current industry practices and technological advances. Teaching is based on Aalborg University's problem-based learning model, which emphasizes practical, project-oriented education.

Qualification requirements:
Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.
Special qualifications:
- PhD in Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Management Engineering or related field
- Strong research potential demonstrated through publications
- Excellent communication skills in English(written and verbal)
- Teaching experience at university level
- Desired
- Post-doctoral research experience

- Experience with external funding applications
- Knowledge of Danish or willingness to learn
- Programming skills relevant to manufacturing systems

Assessment
An academic assessment committee will assess all candidates.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that after the application deadline, the head of the department, with the assistance of the hiring committee, will select the applicants to be assessed. All applicants will be informed whether they have been shortlisted for assessment or not.
Assessed applicants may be invited to a job interview.
When the hiring process is completed, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.
