Subject area and work duties
Surface Chemistry with focus on Studies of Biointerfaces
The candidate for the position is expected to conduct research within the subject area contributing to a further long-term increase in the understanding of interfacial events in complex biological systems i.e. at biointerfaces. The focus will be primarily on studies and understanding of physicochemical and molecular phenomena at such interfaces which might benefit from the use of novel cutting-edge tools. Additionally, the candidate will be required to further develop and manage an existing research environment aimed at studying surface chemical events in complex biological systems as well as actively pursue research funding.
The work duties include teaching and supervision at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with an expectation to integrate the education provided into the department’s common research environment.
To be successful, and as multidisciplinary is a key word in the strategy of the university, interaction with the natural and medical/health sciences should be actively pursued through collaboration with relevant departments at the faculties of Malmö University. Of particular importance will be to work closely with the established research center “Biofilms-Research Center for Biointerfaces.” Naturally, collaboration with leading experts and large-scale infrastructures, both nationally and internationally, is necessary to maintain international recognition. Furthermore, collaboration with the surrounding society, primarily with industry, is crucial.
Qualifications
A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor.
A teacher at Malmö University is expected to have university teacher training corresponding to at least 15 ECTS, or corresponding formal university teacher training, which is determined through validation. New staff members lacking this training must, within the scope of their appointment, commence such training within one year of assuming their position.
In addition to formal competence, University employees must possess the personal capacities necessary to perform the duties of the position well and to represent the University in the best possible way.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor must be the degree of expertise required as qualification for employment. As much attention must be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research or artistic expertise.
A professor must be well established within their scientific field and internationally recognised, taking into account the nature and tradition of the subject specialisation. The level of expertise must significantly exceed the requirements for an appointment as associate professor. A professor must have undergone university teacher training as well as formalised teacher training, including supervision of doctoral students in accordance with the university's recommendations.
A professor must demonstrate:
- Documented competence in their field
- Documented ability to lead and develop academic environments, as well as management experience
- Documented ability to communicate and collaborate with actors in other parts of society with a clear connection to education and research
Teaching expertise relates to:
- Documented ability to - and with a high degree of quality - plan, develop, carry out and lead education using various teaching methods at the first-, second- and third-cycle level
- Documented experience in pedagogical development work and a reflective presentation of their own pedagogical outlook and practices
- Documented ability to link research and education at the first-, second- and third-cycle level with regards to both content and teaching
- Extensive, documented experience in third-cycle education. This may include proven experience of planning, admission, work with study plans and course development, examination, supervision leading up to public defence, and experience as a principal supervisor.
Scientific proficiency relates to:
- Research within fields relevant to the appointment in question
- Documented ability to initiate, plan, develop, carry out and lead research of a high quality and with international impact
- Documented ability to communicate research within and beyond the scientific community
- Documented ability to engage in international research collaborations
- Documented ability to attract external research funding in competition with consideration given to the nature and tradition of the discipline
Additional assessment criteria:
- International research experience, scientific work published in international high impact journals
- Knowledge of, or research in, related and supportive fields such as physical chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical compounding, organic chemistry, chemical physics, molecular biology, structural biology, biophysics, and advanced measurement technology
- Successful national and international collaboration with both academia and surrounding society
- Extensive experience in successful research collaborations with industry, public sectors as well as with national and international research entities, including large-scale infrastructure. An appreciation of industrially relevant matters is important.
- Good ability to obtain significant research funding.
- Documented experience of successful academic leadership i.e. development, management and implementation of research and education.
- Excellent ability and experience in supervision of postgraduate students.
- Very high proficiency in spoken and written English.
Faculty, Department and Research environment
As highlighted earlier, the appointee is expected to work in close collaboration/ integration with the established multidisciplinary research center “Biofilms- Research Center for Biointerfaces” (www.mau.se/brcb), which combines biomedical science with clinical and translational research in pharmaceutical, medical, dental, food and environmental application areas in close collaboration with regional industry. This center is hosted at the Faculty of Health and Society at the Department of Biomedical Science.
The Faculty of Health and Society has programmes and courses in fields including nursing, biomedicine, pharmacy, criminology, sexology, disability and rehabilitation science, social work and police work. Most programmes lead up to a professional exam, but there is also the option of further studies at master's level in most subjects. Medical, health and social sciences research is conducted at the faculty, and there are a large number of research teams in biomedical science, pharmaceutical science, sexology, care sciences, social work, criminology, and police work. Our research is multifaceted and cross-disciplinary, and has a close connection with society and the world of business and industry. The Department of Biomedical Science at Faculty of Health and Society could serve as a hosting department for this position. The department offers programmes leading to a professional qualification as Prescriptionist and Biomedical laboratory scientist (both first cycle, 180 credits), and a master’s programme, Biomedical Surface Science (second cycle, 120 credits), as well as first and second cycle freestanding courses. The Department negotiates the multifaceted intersection between biology, chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, physics, and technology and the interdisciplinary approach to research and education aims to further develop the theoretical and practical understanding of the complex subject matter. Drawing on the balance between basic and applied research, the Department has been successful in attracting funding from regional, national, and international research funding bodies. Our researchers constantly challenge boundaries between scientific specializations, between basic and applied research, and between academia and industry.
