At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Science and Technology a PhD stipend is available within the general research programme: Biomedical Science and Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from March 1, 2026 or soon hereafter.

At Department of Health Science and Technology we conduct research, teaching and innovation within e.g. medicine, biomedicine, biomedical engineering, health technologies, robotics, neuroscience, sports science, public health and physiotherapy. As The Faculty of Medicine wishes PhD positions to enable careers both within and outside the university, the vacant positions are created in such a way that the competences achieved in the position will qualify for both a research career and a career in the commercial and/or public sector. At least a year before the position expires, you will be offered an interview to clarify your future career.

Jobdescription:
This PhD project will address the clinical problems associated with errors in the measurement of blood and, in particular, measurements from a blood gas analyser. Often, blood samples can be incorrectly measured due to gas contamination, delayed analysis time or other disturbances. If these problems remain unidentified, they can result in incorrect clinical decisions and poor patient management.

In this PhD project, you will collect experimental data describing the changes in blood due to pre-analytical errors and build mathematical models to describe these changes. This work can have real clinical impact, potentially resulting in digital software solutions for identifying, and compensating for errors. The work will be in collaboration with Roche Diagnostics International, a leading manufacturer of blood gas analyzers, and experimental work will be performed in their international laboratories.

The PhD will be within the respiratory and critical care group (rcare) at the Department of Health Science and Technology https://vbn.aau.dk/da/organisations/respiratory-and-critical-care-r-care. Here you will be integrated into an international group of researchers, investigating and clinically applying mathematical models at the bedside, often resulting in spin-off companies and products.

The PhD stipend is available for a period of 3 years starting 1. March 2026. The PhD stipend will be part of the Biomedical Science and Engineering programme at the Department of Health Science and Technology.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a master’s degree with a mathematical/engineering background, preferably but not limited to Biomedical Engineering. Candidates will be considered with masters in medical degrees if illustrating evidence of mathematical modelling skills.

The application must include: max 2 pages stating the interest, motivation and qualifications for the project, a short 1-2 page synopsis of your project proposal, a detailed CV with personal contact information and scientific experience and a certified diploma on the master’s degree.

Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1124 of September 19, 2025 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
