Student assistant in biomechanics

Aalborg Universitet (AAU)

Student assistant in biomechanics

Jobbeskrivelse
Are you interested in hands-on experimental and computational biomechanics research? The Biomechanics research group at Aalborg University is looking for motivated students to participate in a paid student project focusing on vibration-based assessment of orthopedic implants. The position is hosted within the Biomechanics group at the Department of Materials and Production at Aalborg University. The employment period is 4 months, with a workload of up to 8 hours per week, and the desired start date is February 2026 or soon hereafter.

Your work tasks
The student assistant will work on a research-oriented project aimed at characterizing the dynamic behavior of bone–pedicle screw systems. The work will involve planning and conducting experimental tests on bone analogue materials, including vibration excitation and response measurements using classical and acoustic modal analysis techniques. In parallel, the student will develop and analyze finite element models of bone–screw systems using Abaqus, with the purpose of identifying natural frequencies and damping characteristics and investigating the influence of different pedicle screw designs. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with researchers in the Biomechanics group and will provide insight into both experimental and numerical methods used in orthopedic biomechanics research.

Your competencies
We are looking for a student who is enrolled at Aalborg University and has a background in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related study program. The ideal candidate has an interest in biomechanics, vibration analysis, and experimental mechanics, and is motivated to work in a research environment. Experience with finite element analysis and/or Abaqus is an advantage, but not a requirement. Curiosity, willingness to learn, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively are important personal qualities for this position.

Who we are
The Biomechanics research group at Aalborg University conducts research at the intersection of engineering and medicine, with a focus on orthopedic biomechanics, implant stability, experimental testing, and computational modeling. The group works closely with clinicians and industrial partners and offers a collaborative and international research environment. More information about the group can be provided upon request.

The Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet the future's demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding to materials' applications in mechanical construction, industrial production, and management. The department has several strong, international, and innovative research groups that comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applied research. The activities encompass research and education within materials, mechanics, physics, production, and industrial management and innovation.

Several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are being developed through interdisciplinary cooperation, benefiting the industry and additional collaborators. As an employee at the department, you will become part of an international research environment focusing on innovation, knowledge sharing/building, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

The Department’s activities are supported by world-class laboratories and an important part of the research being done at the department. Specifically in relation to this position we have facilities for synthesis and characterization of materials covering the range from the atomic scale in the cleanroom and materials labs to fabrication of components and devices.
