Modelshop Intern

BIG is looking for 4 talented architecture, industrial design and modelmaking students with a particular interest in physical model making and architectural fabrication to join our Copenhagen office.

As a Modelshop Intern, you will work alongside our Modelshop team and architecture project teams to design and produce physical models and mock-ups. The role offers hands-on experience across all aspects of working in a professional model workshop, including model production, digital fabrication, equipment management, workshop upkeep and facility improvement.

Please note: This internship must run for a minimum of six months from February/March 1st, 2027.

The role
As a Modelshop Intern, you will contribute to the design and production of models across a range of projects, from quick study models to detailed presentation models. You will work closely with architects, engineers, landscape architects and product designers, helping translate architectural ideas into physical objects.

Your work may include:

  • Designing and producing physical architectural models and mock-ups
  • Working on models at different scales and stages, from quick studies to final presentation models
  • Managing and maintaining BIG's 3D print farm
  • Using digital fabrication tools including 3D printing and laser cutting
  • Developing and applying different modelmaking and fabrication techniques
  • Collaborating with Architecture, Landscape and Product Design teams
  • Contributing to Danish and international projects
  • Supporting the upkeep, organization and improvement of the Modelshop and its facilities

As you develop in the role, you will have opportunities to expand your knowledge of materials, fabrication methods and workshop practices while taking greater responsibility for model design and production.

The ideal candidate:

  • Is currently enrolled as a student in architecture, modelmaking or a related field
  • Has experience with and a strong interest in physical model making
  • Has basic skills in Rhino; advanced skills are a plus
  • Has experience with 3D printing and laser cutting
  • Has a strong interest in architectural fabrication and hands-on making
  • Has knowledge of alternative making techniques such as resin or plaster casting; this is a plus
  • Has a strong attention to detail and takes pride in quality craftsmanship
  • Is flexible and open to new ways of working
  • Can take initiative while responding constructively to direction and instructions
  • Has strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Is fluent in English
  • Is available for an internship of at least six months

Please note: Graduates at Master's level or graduates of a five-year Bachelor's programme cannot be considered for internships, even if they retain student status. Your educational status will be verified, and you will be required to sign a declaration prior to starting your internship.
