The Centre for Star and Planet Formation at the Globe Institute is offering a number of three-year PhD fellowships in the field of cosmochemistry and planetary sciences. The PhD fellowships are available from January 1 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Centre for Star and Planet Formation (Starplan) is a multidisciplinary research centre focused on understanding the formation of planetary systems, including the Solar System, using a multidisciplinary approach that combines astronomy, astrophysics and cosmochemistry. The main focus of these PhD research positions is centered on elucidating the timescales and processes leading to the formation of the Solar System, including the accretion and differentiation of rocky planets, by measurement of isotopic variations in extraterrestrial materials. Qualifications
We seek highly-motivated individuals with a strong background in isotope geochemistry, preferably with experience in mass spectrometry and clean laboratory techniques, to join a dynamic research group and take full advantage of the state-of-the-art isotope facilities that the institution offers to pursue innovative research. These include thermal-ionization and multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers (Thermo Scientific Triton and Neptune, respectively) as well as ultra-clean laboratories. The candidate must possess the credentials necessary to qualify for the PhD programme at the University of Copenhagen.

Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at the Faculty are to:

  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision
  • Write scientific articles and the PhD thesis on the grounds of your research project
  • Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
  • Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
  • Participate in national and international conferences and scientific meetings

Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project or a related field. Please note that your master’s degree must be equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years).

Other important criteria are:

  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project
  • Relevant work experience
  • Publications
  • The grade point average achieved
  • Other professional activities
  • Language skills
  • The successful applicant is also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills

Place of employment
The place of employment is at the Centre for Star and Planet Formation, Globe Institute, Øster Voldgade 5-7, 1350 Copenhagen K.

Formal requirements
The position is available for a 3-year period for applicants holding a relevant master´s degree.

The employment is conditioned upon the applicants successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences according to the rules stipulated in the Ministerial order on the PhD programme at the universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education.

Terms of employment
The position as a PhD fellow is available for a 3-year period.
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organizations. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around DKK 30,700 (approx. 4,100 EUR) (April 2024 level) (taxable) plus pension. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).

The further process
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an unbiased assessor.

The assessor makes a non-prioritized assessment of the academic qualifications and experience with respect to the above-mentioned area of research, techniques, skills and other requirements listed in the advertisement.
