Master Thesis in Transient Power System Simulations representing part of the Swedish railway network
At ABB, we are dedicated to addressing global challenges. Our core values: care, courage, curiosity, and collaboration - combined with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities - are key drivers in our aim to empower everyone to create sustainable solutions. That's our story. Make it your story.
This position reports to
R&D Team Lead

Your role and responsibilities
This thesis will be performed in close collaboration between Corporate Research and Trafikverket. At the Corporate Research Center, we study and develop new technologies related to different fields and products. In the Switching and Systems Team, we are focused on current interruption technologies and electrical systems. Trafikverket manages one of the largest power networks in Sweden, in total about 20 000 km of high voltage lines from Trelleborg in the south to Riksgränsen in the north. 10 000 km of electrified lines, 2 000 km 132 kV, 16,7 Hz transmission lines, 7 000 km 50 Hz auxiliary power supply lines and 48 converter stations with total 1500 MVA continuous power. In electrical power systems, various switching devices, such as circuit breakers and disconnectors, are employed to connect and disconnect different parts of the grid. During transitions between steady states, transient voltages and currents occur, sometimes exceeding nominal levels. To study these transient events, measurement equipment and simulation models, capable of handling very short time scales are essential. ABB Corporate Research has conducted high-frequency measurements in the electric power grid of Trafikverket, focusing particularly on switching operations at the 15 kV voltage level. Both voltages and currents were recorded and analyzed. The next step involves developing simulation models that accurately represent the relevant part of the grid. This will deepen the understanding of the observed phenomena and enable the evaluation of conceivable changes to grid, in a simulation environment. Therefore, this thesis will focus on creating a high-frequency model of the power grid that accurately reflects the measurement data and studying the impact of varying different parameters within the model. Details: • Suggested thesis period is the spring semester 2025, or as agreed • The thesis work comprises 30 credits • The thesis is suitable for one or two students • The thesis will be conducted in collaboration between ABB Corporate Research and Trafikverket. The main supervision of the simulation work will take place at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås Your responsibilities: • Collect information and describe the electric power grid of the Swedish railway (the electrical power grid of Trafikverket) • Build up a simulation model of the part of the electric power grid of Trafikverket where measurements have been performed, in e.g. PSCAD • Explain the phenomena that can be observed in the measurements and simulations • Vary relevant parameters in the simulation model and explain the impact of these variations such as; placement of filters and selection of filter parameters to reduce transients, influence of different cable types and cable lengths • Document the work in a written report, in English

Qualifications for the role

  • Master-level engineering student with knowledge in Electrical Power Systems
  • Background knowledge in transient power system simulations is beneficial, but not necessary
  • Experience from PSCAD can be an advantage
  • Analytical and structured, with a curious mindset
  • Communication skills in English is required and Swedish is beneficial but not necessary
